I'm arriving in to Perth Saturday evening. Staying for two weeks.

There are plans to go to Monkey Mia (i think) camping and stuff.

I have my copy of the Lonely Planet, will check that out and see what is on offer in the city and surrounding area.

But just wondering what everyone else thinks of Perth and maybe there are some hidden gems that the Lonely Planet missed.

hmmmmm Perth..... can't honestly remember what I did there!!(was 2 years ago) Although I know I missed a few places. Recommend taking a west coast tour, usually 4 days up to exmouth & 2 back. If you're in season you'll get to swim with whale sharks, but ningaloo reef is pretty cool regardless.

Good hostel in Perth is Witches Hat, sounds daft but name suits the architecture of the building. And if you do take a tour, Planet Perth are/were good.

Expect the whole scene to be more laid back & quieter than the East coast since most backpackers skip the West coast.

    Rottnest Island
Go see the quokkas (sp), tiny little animals.
Also visit the Casino if ya have the cash.

    Rotto for sure.

Get to a cricket match in either Subiaco or the WACA, if you have time, go to Kalgoorlie (a goldmining town), Margaret River, Avon Valley and Freemantle.

Murchison Gorge is great too and if you head out that direction, Kalbarri is a nice seaside town with the best seafood I've ever had!

I'd love to go back, if I had the money!

    You lucky bugger!

Well, lucky I check my flight times. I'm actually arriving tomorrow (Fri) in Perth. Could have ended up being a little embarrased arriving a day late for my flight :D

    Thanks for the info guys

Mythago, staying with friends so won't be getting hostels.
Mike, chef, will try to get to that island if I can.

Any place I should avoid while when I get there?

Take a tour boat down to Fre-o. Some interesting stories about the houses etc. you see en route and from Fre-o get a boat to Rottnest as others have suggested. Also check out the fab beaches....Cottesloe, Trigg, Scarborough.

Cottesloe beach isn't that nice. Can be a bit rough in that area at times.

South of Perth is beautiful too: Albany - beautiful coastline, Margret River - Wine and surf, Augusta - Cape Leeuwin Park and Lighthouse, Bunbury, etc.

Well work a couple of days if not weeks visiting.
