driven by nostalgia ... i'm curious about accessing newsgroups on my powerbook g4 running OS X 10.4.8

my ISP is u.tv, and they claim to have a news server "news.utvinternet.com"

i can ping this address ... but none of the various freeware clients i've tried can connect to this server to draw down supported groups

i've also tried connecting directly to a group i'm sure is supported by u.tv ... news://news4.euro.net ... which gives me a generic "could not connect to news server ... unable to connect to news://news4.euro.net"

i'm surely missing something basic ... any ideas / advice / wisdom ?

Make sure port 119 is not being blocked by OS X's firewall. Also check the same for any routers between your computer and your net connection.

i'm pretty sure the port is open, as i get a telnet connection to the u.tv newsserver over port 119

Escape character is '^]'.
200 ni-news.utvinternet.com DNEWS Version 5.7b1,, S0, posting OK

that makes me suspect either the news client(s) or my config of those clients

any thoughts ? any one out there with a known good client/config ?

Maybe UTV's usenet server is down? Only reason I can think of that it wouldn't connect.

you're probably right ... i connected just now ... discovered that the u.tv server carries over 1570 groups ... of which 2 are u.tv specific (chat and support) and the other 1568 are microsoft public access groups! i think it was more useful to me when it was down ... at least then i didn't have my hopes up

i can understand why they won't carry say alt.binaries.pictures.hotdonkeys* ... but i was kinda hoping to get at the comp.sys.emulators groups ... i guess all the news groups have been superceded by community sites like boards ;)

* this may not be a real news group ... but you know what i mean

For Reader I use Mac Soup

For a news server I use:
http://news.individual.net/index.html
Worth a tenner a year.
