    Hi all,

just got a new DM500 and put a new image on it but it hangs :(

tried reflashing it via the network but no joy

all I get is a message that says its moving the motor to 28.2, this could be the last channel I was on before the new image?

I can still ftp to the box and telnet, I can even put new images up on it and see changes in the boot graphics but still get the message "moving to 28.2" and no buttons on the RC will change the view.

    what next?
I've no serial port on my Dell PC but have an old win95 box with a serial port and a null modem cable but the dreamup.exe needs loads of dlls that are missing.

    Any Ideas

i take it you checked the remotes batteries :D .can you put the original image on to it or can you not install a new image at all. you can use the web interface to control the dreambox and change the settings. you could try a factory reset if you cannot flash new image or if new images cause same problem.

cheers for that I'll try the web interface, can I do a factory reset from there?
my batteries should be fine as the green LED flashes when a button is pressed. I don't see the red light any more even after a power down.

If that doesn't work I've just noticed my PC in work has a serial port so I can flash it in work, thankfully the 500s is tiny making it very portable.

On another point, the DB is connected to the Ethernet on my netopia broadband modem, is there any security issues with doing that?

Its not the remote, my 7020 did the same when I was setting it up initially.

You need to press the menu button on the remote before you see the moving motr message and go into the setup menu or just change mode to file /vcr/game or whatever other modes your current image has, then go to setup and configure the motor etc and it'll be fine.

If that doesnt work, diconnect all cables frm the back of the box, including power, leave disconnected for a minute or so for all vestididual power to drain then plug back in the tv scart, switch on the telly, put the power lead back in and hold in the top button on the left until you see a message saying factory reset.

This completely deletes all settings and will promt you with the initial setup menu.

Regarding directly connecting it to the inet, make sure you change your default password for root to something other than dreambox (see blue button menu for option to reset password).
If your router has a firewall on it or a dmz would advise turning that on too.

A DMZ is quivalent to direct Internet connection. Only things like SIP/ATAs (secured), Sony PS2, Nintendo or Xbox should be in DMZ. Not Satreceivers, PCs, Mac, Linux etc.

Maybe I should clarify why I said activate the dmz.

Many hardware firewalls simply respond port blocked when when some malcontent scans an IP for open ports - this alerts the scanner that they have found a machine at this IP and therefore worthy of further investigation.

However if you set an available IP not used on your network in the DMZ , maybe 192.168.0.99 for example and forward all ports that you don't use to this IP, when the malcontent scans for open ports the scan gets no response(for the ports forwarding to the DMZ) - essentially stealthed.
    This is a good thing.

Sorry for not explaining this in my original post, erroneously assumed it was clear what I meant, looking back now I can see its not.

OP did you get it fixed in the end ?

Got the DM 500 back up and running it needed the DreamUp serial solution, now the fun begins :) , there seems to be a full list of satellites but in the motor dialog box theres no list of satellites so is there a way to ftp the list of sats to the right places? I'm using the latest Gemini project image

    Choose this :-

    satellite.png

    Then you should see :-

    sats.png

There shouldnt be any need to upload sat config files...if you need to though (and you should't in Gemini) you can grab a satellites.xml file at http://joshyfun.peque.org/transponders/dreambox.html then just ftp it to /var/tuxbox/

You can mess about with your channel lists using Dreamboxedit found at http://dreambox.happyllama.com/ if you want to (its a nice tool) if you are a tinkerer of things.
