    Hi,

My friend and I were having an argument because he says that Kenpo Karate would beat BJJ in a fight. He does Karate and I'v showed him UFC 1-3 but he still seems convinced.Obviosly there are circumstances that karate might have a chance like if you went to the ground and his mate came over and started kicking the BJJer but Im saying this is in a neutral environment

    What are YOUR thoughts?

My thoughts are it's a silly arguement and you should practice your jiujitsu.

I find it is sometimes impossible to convince people of the importance of the ground game. I work with a guy that does boxing and after failing miserably to explain the finer points of BJJ to him I invited him down to our thursday mma class in loughlinstown. He lasted two rounds and after being mounted and punched in the face (lightly) he left. The funny thing is he still isn't convinced at all and maintains if he felt better he would have knocked everybody out.
I think it's better to avoid these arguments as it usually leads nowhere.
Maybe you should invite your mate down to SBG and show him a few techniques?

You are absolutely right. Its not that BJJ is better than Kenpo. Thats like saying that Judo is better than Boxing. The two styles are too different. What makes the BJJ'er more likely to win in a fight is the fact that the Kenpo person will have no idea how to handle a grappler, or even wrestler. So its not only BJJ, but Judo, Sambo etc. My own instructors realise this and are eager to introduce more grappling into our Kenpo. This is one of the main reasons why I stayed with them after starting MMA. Theres nothing that I would love more than to see grappling added to the syllabus in my Kenpo club and the level of contact increased.

my advice would be not to get involved in these silly would style x beat style y arguments. there are too many variables and you just end up with people getting upset/personal over their emotional attachment to a name.

Just fight each other. The best 3 out of 5 wins. The loser shuts his pie hole.;)

I agree with John. People fight people not styles fighting styles . Sometimes you win sometimes you lose. Frazier beat Ali Ali beat Frazier its whatever goes down on the day

It depends on the day , if it goes to ground you win, if it doesn't he's favourite.
I reckon a good martial artist should have both a standup and ground/throw game.

    Bingo.

In all fairness though, while styles make fights, it's fighters who win them. You can't really say "X is better than Y" without looking at who would be representing the various styles.

So what if he says Kenpo is better? Who cares? If he wants to think that fine, let him. If you really want to educate him take him down to SBG and train with him there.

Anyway, if he's training Kenpo in a decent club he should be able to see that you need a ground game. If he thinks stand-up will do him fine he's not training with a decent instructor.

We should get BJJ and Kenpo into a ring and let them beat the hell out of each other. Do you know where they live?
