    HI all

    I'm looking to pick up a CBR250
From what i've seen there is the MC19 or MC22

Any reccomondations on which i should be on the lookout for?
What would be the most i should shell out for one?
Seen the Planetfun crowd had one for 4700, but that looks a bit steep TBH.......

    Cheers :)

MC22 is the later model, looks more "modern".
4,700 is absurd money, given you can get a brand new bike for that these days.

Look for one that has had no previous Irish owners if possible. ;)

Have a look on www.cbr250.com for practical opinions regarding owning either of these. I have an MC19 and it is fine for what I need. It will cruise all day at 120kph and is very comfortable. The MC22 is a little more 'exotic' and looks better with the banana swing arm and dual front discs. I paid €600 for my '91 black version with 45k kms on it, so use the money you save to buy a really good set of leathers.

I'm currently shopping for a '01 CBR600 and am looking at spending €4700 so that might put the price of the MC22 into context for you.

This is bringing back memories. I had a '90 MC19 before with 15k on the clocks, got it for about 2,200 pounds from a shop in 1999. I remember lusting after the 250's for months when I was on an RG80, and didn't think I'd have any hope of ever getting one, what with insurance , and being 20 etc.

CBR250's are an absolute hoot, 18k RPM redline, mad! Thing sounds like a small jet winding up for take off :)

    Suzuki SV1000 these days.

Yea i'll be staying clear of the thiving B*****ts in Dublin anyhow.
City Spares had one there a while back for 2500 which was good....
Off too look at a few before the christmas hits.....

So what sort of things should i be looking out for when viewing the bikes?
Apart from driving the Bo**ox out of it!! :D

You should be trying to buy the cleanest bike with the lowest mileage you can find. There are plenty of people who look after their bikes and it shows when you look closely. Unfortunately these bikes are mostly ridden by learners and they get dropped regularly - try and find one which hasn't. The engines will suffer if the oil isn't kept clean (19k redline = rapid wear) Watch for rust on the underside of the fuel tank, oil leaks (they shouldn't) and misfiring at high or low revs. Low = carb problems, high = HT or fuel supply problems. The fuel pumps, HT coils and exhaust headers commonly give problems but the bike will run like crap if any of these needs attention. Try and find out a history of the bike from the last owner.

I think I've seen the bike you're talking about. It looked like a pile of crap comparing to my cibby, which I got for 200euro less than that price :)

My mc 19 is an 88 model and easily hits 160 and can go up to 190 if i push the revs up-great fun and perfect for building up to cbr 600-good luck

it's not a big deal to get a bike. A big deal is to pay the insurance for it. I'm NOT willing to pay more than 1k euro insure the bike!

Looks like i will need a new machine soon rather then later.
Guy in a car pulled out of a junction and threw me off the bike this evening....
My old bike is in bits now. Old story guy didn't see me comming up the road and pulled out straight into the side of me. :( Got a nice trip theought the air and real friendly with the tar.

For anyone who might be reading this and wondering about safety gear. Quality gear is the reason i am just a bit sore and bruised and not a bloody reck.
You would be amazed how much of that rider training sticks in your head when riding even if you dont notice it. Thank god i had backed off the throttle comming up to that junction or i could have been a lot worse.

So kudos for all the good advice on here when i was starting out. I think it made a hell of a difference. Thanks guys.

Jeez - that's not nice - even if you are all right now and able to tell the tale.

Cheers for sharing, and you are right, training and the right gear can do you no harm and in your case, it may even have saved your life.

Thanks for sharing, hope you recover fully and I presume the halfwit cager is going to be splashing out for your new motor.

I'll be selling mine in three weeks - its an MC19, 1991 with 48 kkms on it. Its just had a full service, its got good tyres, perfect chain and sprockets, a new battery, Goodridge front hose and was resprayed bright metallic yellow last august. I will be looking for €1750 for it - theres a pic of it here. I'll stick an ad up on Adverts.ie when its ready to go (I have to paint the back wheel and put bulbs in the clocks...) Genuine reason for sale - have to get money for go-faster goodies for my CBR600...
