Would you backpack your own country?

When I was travelling around the north island of New Zealand I stopped of at a hostel in Pihia.
Usual thing when you get to room, small talk and find out where people are from and what they are doing.

One of the guys was from New Zealand and had hitched his was from the south Island all the way. He said he had never explored his own country.
He was starting a new job but decided to explore on his way up and take the long way.

I don't think I would ever backpack let alone hitch around Ireland.

    What anyone else?

I wouldn't backpack or hitch hike around Ireland but being away has made me realise how much of it I haven't seen.

I get talking to so many people who tell me about they're travels in Ireland that I end up feeling really bad that Australian's have seen more of my home country than I have.

So I'm definately going to make an effort to do a few weekend breaks when I get back and some around Europe too which I also haven't seen nearly enough of.

Very interesting thread :) I don't think I'd backpack Ireland... I do want to explore parts of the island, but I don't think I'd do it in the same way I'd like to do other countries.

An important part of travelling for me is having the ability to re-invent yourself in a sense. Being around strangers and in a new culture, and being miles away from home, means at least for me, that I can do things I wouldn't normally do, or I won't feel as self-conscious as I might knowing that if I'm around Irish people "I should know better".
That kinda gives the impression that I'm getting locked and banging wh*res.... :p But I assure you that's not the case/plan ;)

I dunno, I can't really articulate it as much as I'd like to be able to...
