    Folks,

I have been restoring a GT6 for an age but am having the worst ever time tring to get a bodyshell (the original is rusted to perdition). There is a supplier of a mighty fine looking GRP body shell that would fit it - here - but what do you reckon...is it worth sacrificing originality? good/bad idea?

    Originality shmality.

I'd go for the gRP shell. You'll be keeping a classic on the road.

If you like the LeMans Spitfire and have already restored everything but the body, then go for it.

On the other hand if there's still plenty to do, or the restoration has been less than perfect, then do the sums carefully.

You could buy an already restored car and sell yours for parts or keep for spares.

Tough one.... You can probably buy a decent one for less (I've one that you might like :D )

You should probably check with your insurance to see if they'd object - I'd a bit of a job with my 2.5 Spitfire - the main problem was establishing value and a GRP replacement bodyshell might make them see it as a kit, no matter how much it resembles the original.

I've seen steel GT6 original bodyshells advertised from £600 in the UK. Some come from the US and are said to be relatively decent. Chig Doig in Fyfe is supposed to be a good source.

I suppose it all boils down to whether or not you have a sentimental attachment to the car and if you've sunk much money into it already.

don't do it...it WILL be a Kit.....and no-one will ever buy it off you if you want to sell....

You're right - I was just having a mid life crisis. I will resume the quest for a body shell again in the new year. Thanks.

As far as I know they don't make shells for the GT6 or Spitfire. Just the later TRs (not the 7!) according to the last catalogue I got (about a year ago). Scuppered my plans for a Spitfire reshell...
