is the message that just came up on my PC. I was on it earlier and it was fine, shut it down left the house and came home an hour later plugged it in and this appears. It happened the other morning as well, thought it was a loose cable or something had a look inside then it worked again. Now I don't know what to do because I'm guessing it isn't a loose cable. I don't really know how to get this back up and running. I don't want to wipe and reinstall without trying to get back into Windows, I should be able to do that give that I was able to the other morning. As a precaution I might wipe and reinstall when I get back in in case something is afoot.

    Advice would be helpful. It's XP Pro SP2, 512 RAM, 3.0Ghz P4.

Are you getting 'Diskboot failure' or 'Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press Enter'? Check your BIOS settings to make sure your hard drive is being picked up.

Sorry yeah, it's the 'Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press Enter' thing that's showing up. I just went upstairs to switch it on and make a note of the error(s) and it's now working again, I got into XP. I don't know what's going on. If it's happened twice I can see it happening again. I can't remember the bios settings off the top of my head, can't remember the sequence I mean.

check to see if you are getting drive errors in the system log. right click my computer --> manage --> event viewer --> system. sounds to me like the system is having problems reading the boot sector on the hdd, due to the disk being about to fail......

^ I agree. Sounds like the HD is failing. Start backing up now!

I backed up stuff at Christmas. 9 times out of 10 this happens now and I probably only get in by luck, I presume I should just buy a new HD and not try wiping and reinstalling...
