The finale of season 4 of the wire aired last week in the states, and has cemented its place as the best show on tv. Anyone else been keeping in touch with the new season? It focused on the education system in baltimore and its characters and acting were superb, extreemly realistic, and devoid of any of the horrible cliches that are in most tv shows. I'd advise everyone to get the dvd and catch up on the last 4 seasons, it really is amazing.

It's been commented on elsewhere but yes I've been worshipping at David Simon's door since "Homicide: Life on the Street" was born from his work.

However "The Wire" blows that away and with season four, I agree, it's the best thing on TV (Tvnutz is with me on this). It's the most adult show I know in terms of having intelligent plotting, realistic situations (depressingly so at times) and multi-shaded characters.
When you see the finale and see how intricately well plotted the whole season was to bring you to that point, it's an amzing feeling. Most shows have obvious narrative forces - here everything flows beautifully.
Characters are amazing too - you'll really feel your heart torn at points by the plight of the kids, whose situations you know are being repeated across the States and indeed the world. Fantastic acting there - I can't recall the last time I ever got so attached to someone who just really had 12 episodes on screen.

I've been championing the show on this forum since the beginning and hopefully got at least one more convert.

Said it before and I'll say it again: Best show ever. Yes - that good.

have only seen the first two seasons unfortunatley, a really incredible show that deserves to be held up in the same regard as Sopranos imo

will get the third season boxset after Chrimbo methinks!

yep...we had a thread somewhere on this. Best show ever made, better than the overrated Sopranos IMO.

Ixoy...I do agree! :D And you summed up the last episode better than I could. I also think season 4 was probably the best season so far...other may disagree, but overall the show is amazing. I have season 3 already pre ordered to add to my seasons 1 and 2 :)

I've just finished watching the fourth season of The Wire. I also want to say that this is a great show that everyone should watch. The Wire is one of those shows you can safely call art - and great art at that. Buying the first season on DVD will be one of the best purchases you will ever make. This is one of those shows you MUST watch from the very beginning, so make use of those January sales!

It's unfortunate that there's only one more season left before it's over but I guess we should count our blessings considering the lousy ratings the show has always suffered. I don't know a single person who has seen this show, let alone watches it regularly.

Interestingly enough, Avon Barksdale is based on old real-life Baltimore drug kingpin Melvin Williams - the same guy who plays the church Deacon on the show!

    To conclude:

Omar, you be the king yo.

Is it just me or can anyone else not believe that the character "Snoop" , the smaller of Marlo's assassins is supposed to be female? and is played by a female actress? wtf

She's not "supposed" to be - she actually is a woman! The actress who plays her, Felicia Pearson, actually spent seven years in jail for shooting a woman so she's able to inject a frightening amount of herself into the role it would seem.

Ye I figured it out after the first episode. Some of my mates didn't. Love the opening scene where she is in buying the nail gun, again a scene that is apparantly based on something she did in her life.

Anyone know if "The Corner" is worth checking out?

It's a minseries based on a David Simons book with a lot of the characters from the wire in it.

Anyone know when FX or TG4 are due to start showing season 4 of it here? Forgot to "obtain it from other sources".

Oh it's on next month...found it courtesy of the great DigiGuide:

    DRAMA: The Wire
    On: FX (270)
Date: Tuesday 13th February 2007 (starting in 39 days)
Time: 22:00 to 23:05 (1 hour and 5 minutes long)

    Boys of Summer.
Brand new drama. Four West Baltimore boys wrestle with what to do with the rest of their summer vacation as the new school year approaches. Bodie's corner is running slower than usual so he decides to take on a runner. Marlo believes he has finally solved the problem that Stringer could never figure out. Freamon, Greggs and Sydnor go to Pearlman to see if she will issue City Hall subpoenas. Meanwhile, the mayoral race heats up as Mayor Royce and his primary challenger, Tommy Carcetti, each hit the campaign trail. Prez begins preparing for his new career in higher education, while McNulty ends up turning down a promotion.
