Ok this issue has been going on for months and i can't fix it.

    1) My PC just restarts on it own. No warning, just instantly restartrs randomly. Nothing appears in the event viewer.

    2) Every while when i go to start windows i get "C:\windows\ something is corrupt, try to repair the ****.

When i try to do anything after this it doesn't work.
    - When i try to go into the repair console, and select the windows install i wanna repair. It locks up and i can't even open the CD Drives.

    - When i try to format using the windows XP CD i've got it goes through the "press F8 if you agree to all the licence crap" and then it says "Searching for previous installations of windows". Then it stops there. Freezes, nothing happens.

So theres absolutely nothing i can do to format.

When i put i a windows 2000 CD i can format from that.
If i install win2k, i can see all my crap from the winxp install on in there.

just a note, since this has been happenning, i've replaced the folloing,

    - 2x hardrives
    - all ram
    - mainboard
    - GFX card
    - ALL cables
    - PSU

the only thing i can think of is either the winxp CD i've got is screwed (because i have never been able to get into safemode, when i try to get into safemode all these lines of text come up and it stops at mup.sys)

    or my soundcard is screwed??

i lost 700gigs of my MP3's and, movies, photo's etc.

    please help

Ah mup.sys strikes again. Try disabling Power Management in your BIOS settings and see if you get anywhere.

why what is it? i've had 2 different mainboards and the same thing is happening. why would it just restart on it's own and randomly corrupt system files?

I had similar random restart problems because of a dodgy CPU fan. Once I remounted it it seemed to resolve the problem.Did U look at the Heatsink?

Type in mup.sys in google and you'll see how many issues it brings up. :) Restarts could be caused by many things like overheating, dodgy drivers, bad ram and other things, try what dr.bollocko suggested.

Is your temperature probe fitted incorrectly? Did you have to fit that yourself?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,949 ✭✭✭SouperComputer

did you stress test and error test the CPU? The idle temp might be fine but it could be that the CPU is generating errors under load, regardless of temps. The CPU may have overheated in the past and is failing.

Looking at your list, of replaced parts its the only thing left to test!

Heat up the CPU with a 5min run with CPU burn In, turn off error checking.
Then run 4M pi with superpi
If you wish, you can use speedfan to monitor voltages and temps.

If you dont have bootable windows environment to test, then you can download UBCD which contains a host of stress testing utils.

Can you post up what Mobo/version/ram/CPU/HD' etc etc you are using?
Also, dont rule out a fecked XP cd like you said!

    OK formatted the PC again.

This time it was working fine for a while. But then i was watching a movie, and after about an hour the screen went into "sleep" mode, the sound stayed on for about 15 seconds but then it stopped and the PC had reset itself.

Again after that i was watching the film again and fell asleep, when i woke up the PC had frozen and there was a kinda buzzy sound, it's made that sound before, where all the audio get's screwed up and makes screatching noises...

    wtf

I was gonna suggest the ram but considering you have replaced it and basically rebuitly your machice it must be the WINXP disk.

Get another WINXP disc and try that!!

Sounds like a bear! You can rule out the disk then.

Did you replace all of the parts at once or sequentially? All I can think is that an older damaged component has damaged a new one. EG old mobo damaged CPU which then damaged new mobo. Or the new mobo is buggered from the start.

Have you tried the stress tests yet? Are you using an audo card or onboard sound?
When did issues first start to occur and what were the signs that things were going wrong?

it happened one day just for no reason. system32 is corrupt, couldn't wipe the HDD etc. Tried different ram.

I could install a new hard drive and then retrieve the data from the old one as a slave. But it kept happeneing.

Then it stopped for AGES. Now it's back again.

Can you give a timeline of what parts were replaced and what problems you had? Lay it all out, give as much detail as you can and we can proabbly sort it.

    Not to sure really. Erm.

The thing is, i can play games on full detail etc for hours and nothing happens, then it's just sitting idle and it crashes or restarts on it's own, or locks up with that constant screaching sound from the speakers.

it started happening about 8 months ago. Then i replaced all the parts, and it seemed to be fixed. all parts at the same time pretty much,

if the CPU was burnt or burning, why would i be able to play streseful games etc?

although 3/10 times when i turn on warcraft, it locks up the whole PC before i even enter the actual game from the menu.. although ingame it doesn't lock up...

You installed new components and didn't format xp?

I would check both ram, and chkdsk your hd. Sounds like a corrupt windows install. Been there before with a unstable oc. Oh, and disable auto restart on system failure in Windows.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 257 ✭✭oceansize

OK i've resintalled windows again. This time i didn't install any soundcard drivers and it's working fine. No lockups etc...

What are the current components being used, and what were the old components? (makes and models), it sounds either like a dodgy ide driver, or a dodgy RAM setting in the bios (I had this on a DFI board once, it was being too aggressive with the RAM). And what sound card? :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 257 ✭✭oceansize

    Ok,

    Athlon 64 3000+

Foxcon (asus) mainboard. (Had an Abit Fatal1ty)

generic ram (all different brands, 3x sticks, tried all 3 seperately) PC2700 and PC3200.

Audigy 2 Soundcard (always had this)

Gefore 7800 GT 512MB. (Was a radeon 9600xt or something)

Samsung 250GB HDD (used to be a Quantum Fireball 80GB)

I have onboard sound card, should i just use that and remove the Audigy?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,160 ✭✭✭✭astrofool

Whats the chipset? Via or nforce? Was the Abit the same chipset? Creative cards can have awful problems with some chipsets.

Did you install the motherboard drivers at all?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,276 ✭✭✭damnyanks

The ram may have gotten some static charge or something. Check the ram for errors. I had the same problem before, it was the ram

The mainboard uses nForce4 chipset. I think the Abit Board used that aswell.

1 of the ram sticks is brand new. can't all have static problems!

goto control panel/power management and disable hybernate and any auto shutdowns of harddiscs...

may not be a root cause but might help you

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,160 ✭✭✭✭astrofool

Have you tried different PCI slots for the sound card, the furthest one from the GFX is usually recommended for sound, so the lowest slot usually.

You are using the latest drivers for the motherboard found on nvidia.com aren't you? AND also using the latest Creative drivers found on their website? (use the software autoupdate tool and let it install EVERYTHING it finds).

    That's what I'd be doing.
Can you try the audigy in a different machine?

    Good luck,

I agree with the oters, leave Audigy out and see how things go. Luckily the nForce audio isnt too bad!

I've been having the same problem aswell. Spec in sig (AMD3000+ aswell).
It got a lot worse today - see http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055031344
I can't get to the reinstall screen when using the windows cd now - get a BSOD jsut before I can view existing installations.
