I am going to have about 17 hours to kill in bahrain and was wondering if anyone has any good places to go things to see in that sort of timeframe.

Sounds like the title of a bond movie!

    No booze in Bahrain AFAIK

You can get drink in Bahrain. It's not as strict as Saudi, in fact, on Thursday evenings you'll see a constant stream of Saudis travelling over the bridge that connects Saudi Arabia to Bahrain to go on the piss (their weekend is Friday/Saturday).

I was over there last January for work and had time to spare. Got a taxi driver to take me to the centre of Manama for a look around the Souq and gold markets. Altho I got completely lost and spent hours trying to find a way out of a very questionnable looking neighbourhood! Felt quite safe tho.

There didn't seem like there was a whole lot to do there other than chillin by the pool (hotel), checking out a shopping centre (for gadgets:)) or perhaps visiting the tree of life (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tree_of_Life%2C_Bahrain) and hopefully spot a few camels along the way (it's a bit outside Manama).

Just don't steal anything whatever you do, or you'll come back minus the hand you stole it with ;)

There's lots of good restaurants in Bahrain and plenty of drink too even if served a little surreptitiously.

There's also a Rugby club and a very fancy Golf course if you're so inclined. All in all not a bad place!

Thanks for all the replies - not going for a while yet but reckon I will check out the gold markets and the souq, tree of life too if I can drag myself away from the pool for long enough.

You won't go near the pool there if it's summer time.

    Forget it !
