    Hi everyone,

I am planning on buying a Dell PC. I was just wondering if I am better off holding off until the new year? Do they generally reduce prices after the mad Christmas rush?

    Ta ta.

I don't think I have ever seen Festive component deals.

Well now in fairness that depends on the model you choose! I'm fairly happy with the 9200 I just bought. Tooless chasis, two hard drive bays and two free PCI slots.

The pricing at the moment is fairly aggresive - as it will be after Christmas. The Major difference will be that in January it will be labeled a January sale rather than a Christmas sale :D Dell.co.uk is cheaper if you have a British address & credit card.

If you are going to order in January, wait until the second week. They normally add extras to the offers round about then...

That's the one I was thinking of buying. I plan on using it for a lot of .NET development, sound editing & recording, limited video editing (just for fun), surfing net & email, burning DVD's. I might play the odd game on it but I'm not big into games so not too concerned about that. Do you think it is up to this?

Depends on what kind of sound editing you do - the sound cards Dell provide are for general usage (music, games, general audio editing). You can always buy the machine with basic sound and source a more specialised sound card elswhere and install it yourself.

For everything else it's pretty good, get a decent core 2 processor and 2 gigs RAM and you'll be happy with the results I reckon. All of this of course depends on your budget :)

well at the moment dell are charging 1659 for the spec I want for the 9200. on wednesday same spec was 1470 so they have increased the price until they start their sale in january I think. over the last couple of months the price for the same spec has varied little. usually either 1450 to 1470 since september even with all their great offers they say they have. I am holding out till feb for vista and will see what price it is then.

Just to go off topic here but instead of starting a new thread, what would be an ideal computer spec for a business computer. Main programs would be,

    Photoshop
    Illustrator
    All macromedia suite
and few more large programes. I'm not a gamer and don't really care about the sound

Anyone any suggestions?, I know how to use the computer but not much about what makes them tick:confused:

Dell Has had a xmas offer for years now. As far as other online stores. they all run some type of christmas special, wether it be b-grade items, or the site its self knocking a bit off certain products. But the computer hardware worlf dosent really work the same way as say " the car market "

Toms ford mondeo was bought on 24th december 2006
Mikes ford mondeao was bough on the 3rd january 2007

tom and mikes car were made in th same plant, the same day. Tom's is now valued 14,000€ while mikes is 16,000€

I dont know if that makes sense to you, but its crystal clear to me.

have bought dell since 1995 but recently have used www.ankermann-pc.com and they are excelent - roughly 40% cheaper than dell. the only drawbacks are sightly sub-standard cases and i wouldnt bet on their aftersales service - but 40% is some difference. on both occassions they delivered within 10 days of order

Just wondering if Dell usually do a January sale? I'll be buying a laptop through their EPP program and have a budget of €800 - €900.

    Thanks!

Yeah, check out the website like... Looking like upto €200 off, free shipping, and free delivery, depending on which model you buy.

Seems like 70euro off and free shipping (i think they were offering free shipping before xmas no?) I customized a laptop just now and it seems dearer than before xmas, but I might have made a mistake. Any one else know if there's that much differance with the sale

The laptop I was thinking of (640m) is €70 dearer now than it was 2 weeks ago. I think we havent seen the start of the sale yet to be honest. If this is the sale, someone should tell them the prices are going in the wrong direction!

well you have to enter the sale promotion codes so that would make it a sale i think , btw i bought before xmas so any negitive sale related comments are just to reassure myself i shouldn't have waited for said sale :p

[broken record]Of course Dell have a January sale. They've had a sale every month now for years.
Double memory/free delivery/free accessories/free processor upgrade/reduced price on goods that follow Moores law[/broken record]

But will it be special, a real sale, nope. Your best bet might be to head to the outlet to get a returned Christmas machine but don't forget to upgrade the warranty. Or go to the small business section if you already have a monitor and printer etc.

Anyone know when the salespersons quarter ends - as that's when they might give something more to make quota ...

Well no joy today on the website. Im still looking at 1300 ish for a 640m and the only deal was an increased hard drive.. and I dont really need that.

A double ram offer would be great but no sign of it today. The site seems to be updated on thursdays so I'll sit tight.

I'm not too impressed with the current prices atm.

Hopefully the core duo prices will come down soom.

I think apple are releasing quad core on the macbook pros next week.

The Dell laptop with the AMD processor is cheaper, is that worth a look??

yes, but the cheapo inspirons won't take PCMCIA cards anymore ( you probably won't need - but if you do it's a show stopper )
the business spam brochures arrived to day - just the usual guff

Cheers.. I'll wait another week and then bite my tongue while I buy a 640m.
Its the long battery life I need.. I dont think I'll get it anywhere else for that money.

The end of quarter I think is January end.
The other milestone that I could guess at is March end/April, just before/after Intel bring out the Centrino Pro chipset, the current stuff will be "the old technology".
