Motor tax payment

I've ordered a new car which may or may not be delivered sometime in January. The road tax on my current car expires at the end of this month. I was wondering can I legally drive for the month of January before I have to renew it?
The reason I ask is that the tax office permits applications to be made one month after the expiration of the current disc. Thanks.

Yes that is correct. As long as the car tax is paid by the end of the month following the expiry of the tax.
