I am trying to connect a pair of these speakers which are digital only to a new Dell pc which uses an integrated sigmatel 9227 sound card. The dell has dolby digital capability so I presume it can be used with these speakers.

Can anyone suggest what settings I should be using?

From what I can gather it uses coax SPDIF for the digital link to the sound card.

You will need to check the PC to see if it has the coax SPDIF input in order to connect them just because a sound chip supports surround sound does not mean it will have the necessary inputs.

Here are examples of what the coax SPDIF connector looks like it most often marked with a yellow ring around it.

If it does have the connector you might need to go into the sound cards control panel and configure it to work in SPDIF mode there should be a SigmaTel control panel entry in the Windows control panel (not too familiar with SigmaTel stuff so that's my best guess).
