    Hi,

Can anyone recommend good books for this? I really want to learn to play, but don't want to get lessons!

Also, any ideas on a first guitar? What should I be looking out for?

    Thanks in advance :)

My advice is get a book of songs you know and like, and buy a guitar you like, iif that's electric, steel string or classical. Don't by something too cheap. If you have a friend who plays, or meet someone from the boards in shop to show you what to look out for. Some books have an intro that shows you what to look out for when buying a guitar. I'm guessing you'd pick up a decent electric for 250 and acoustic for 150. Forget the starter packs that are around at Christmas. Consider 2nd hand too.

I found the best way to learn was with About.com, they have quite a few lessons and using that and alot( and I mean a lot!) of tabs you'll get good vey quickly.

    Thanks for the advice.

That about.com looks good actually. Are there any DVDs or anything that are any good??

Don't stick to learning just the type of music you like, when it comes to different styles you won't be able to play them if you play, for example, just rock and nothing else. Get a chord book, learn scales.
