Can you Skip?

I'm just wondering if people out there in Irish Martial Arts land can skip. I myself can't. I'm not sure if I lack the gene required to be a competent skipper of I've just never applied myself. I can do about 8 jumps before I get tangled. Nevermind any of that whizzing twohands together stuff.

The boxers are big fans of it traditionally.

Yep mind i've done it for a while. The way I went at it was like this.
Get your standard skip down - jumping with both feet at the same time > then onto the shuffle - jump the rope with your left foot, then your right then your left (like you're running on the spot) > then get 2 jumps on your left, 2 on your right, 2 on your left and so on. Then get singles down - jumping continuously on your left, then on your right and so on. Now you've got a routine. Mix it up
    10 two feets > 10 singles > 10 singles (2 on each foot) > 10 on your left > 10 on your right > back to 10 two feets.
It's easy enough really just get the rhythm down and you'll get it soon enough. If you want to put a push into the routine whack some doubles in there - getting the rope to do two orbits of your body between jumps.
A lot of the fancy stuff is just a trick of the eye.
It helps to get some music on with a good beat in it. 3 or 5 minute rounds with 30 seconds rest are good. To push the fitness stick 50 sprawls in between each round or alternate rounds shadow boxing or on the bag. If you've no space you can always put the bag on the ground and give it GNP. It aint MA but its as close as I'm going to get in the kitchen at night when the wife and kids are tucked up in bed!!
A good rope makes a hell of a difference - if it's too light it'll get tangled more. IMO a leather rope with ball bearing swivel is the one to go for.

Generally goes hop, hop, tangle, trip and then I've accidentally hung myself from the rafters.

Cable type ropes are best, either steel type or electrical type are great, but if you're learning its best to start with a leather one. I love skipping and its benefits are endless for such a simple exercise.

Yep, can skip, its a great exercise. up and down the pace, just like interval training. I especially like jumping high, both feet together, and getting the rope under you twice, per jump. do 30 secs of that at end of round of skipping and its a great work out.

I did read somewhere and I cannot find the source, that 10 mins of skipping beings same benefit as 30 mins jogging. (not sure if its true)
Has anyone else come across this, or expand of this?

apparently 10 mins on a rebounder, also are supposed to bring same benefits of 30 mins jogging???

Yes I can skip, it is not only a good aerobic exercise but helps with coordination and footwork. Another advantage is that you don't need a lot of space to train in and it can be done indoors or outdoors

    Wikipedia says:
'This aerobic exercise can achieve a "burn rate" of up to 1300 calories per hour of vigorous activity, with about 0.1 calories consumed per jump. Ten minutes of jumping rope is roughly the equivalent of running an eight-minute mile.'

Its not that reliable but maybe it's true.

yeah i can skip good. boxed and coached for a long time.
many benifits, great way to warm up as well before training.
you could bring it into youre training in between rounds of
pad and bag work with different levels of intesity.

have fun learning, would def reccomend it.!

sounds good - i'll have to try it out

You've got that extra incentive to keep the feet up too if you're skipping barefoot!!!!

    Why Tim?

I've found it a great help and many others have.

I'm with Tim - I can do it (vaguely) but I couldn't see the point, and I find it mind numbingly boring.

Yes, but I do other foot routines in prep for fighting.

I prefer skipping to running, it's kinder to my old joints :D

I use a heavy leather rope out doors and either a speed rope or a Buddy Lee rope indoors, they are faster but less durable than the leather boxers rope.

I can do double unders and stuff, but not like yer man on Rossboxing!

skipping is great for co-ordination and footwork and is essential to boxers-this would also help any fighting art-and yes i can skip like rocy-but better!!!

I do think learning to skip is essential though. I fyou cant skip well your coordination will onl be developed by learning this new skill. Once you can do it though (well, just like rocky) I'd move onto the next skill.

I find skipping for long periods of time generally wastful over other forms of training for MMA.

    Peace

I enjoy skipping. I like working it into circuits of bag work, fianna's and shadow boxing for a nice conditioning setting. I don't feel it is an integral part of the fight game, but it is very good to help you get your co-ordination down.

    Why Tim?
Partially for reasons that Clive gave. There are also probably plenty of more sports specifics drills a person could be going.

Of course, the real reason is simply because I'm crap at it! :)

Theres actually a strong medical link between people who lack the coordination to skip and people who suffer from IRD- it could be you.

    screw you roper!

I can't quite skip like Floyd 'prettyboy' (see youtube) but not too bad. problem is im absolutely knackered after 30secs and nearly have a heart attack if I keep going!

Glad to hear that skipping is better than jogging cus when I get tired I just sit down and dont have to walk the 500m home:o

Anyone else look like they have been lashed on the back of the arms or legs after trying to break the world record for most rotations of rope in 10secs? (Bloody sore)

Skipping is obviously and tried and tested excercise with obvious benefits.

    I can skip somewhat.

I got into doing slow skipping with a heavy rope for 10-20mins. Sometimes up to 30mins. Twas great for building stamina especially in the calves. But eventually I got horrible shin splints which lasted for a few weeks
