My old laptop stopped turning on, basically a problem with power supply and motherboard that wasn't worth fixing. So bought a new laptop. As far as I know the hard drive is fine on the old laptop. Someone suggested it's possible to transfer files from the old laptop which won't turn on to the new one. Any links to sites which can tell me how to do this or anyone here know? Thanks

Same thing happend to me during the week so i bought an 2.5" external enclosure (€20 in peats) it connects through your USB port. It also comes in handy has a portable hard drive.

Removing the drive from the old laptop should be fairly easy. Then just do as Auvers said and get an external enclosure for it.

I don't have any links off the top of my head, but it is fairly easy to do. Just remember not to force anything and you will be fine.

Excuse my ignorance but how do I know if I need a 2.5" or 3.5" external enclosure? The hard drive comes from a Fujitsu Siemens C1020 laptop. Thanks for the help btw.

Laptop hard drives are 2.5" and desktops hard drives are 3.5", its just the size of the bay they fit into.

you can get an internal adaptor too to connect a 2.5" drive onto a normal IDE cable, can be a lot cheaper if only a one off, then again if only a one off one of you mates may already have an external adaptor.

Then again putting the drive in USB case makes nice data storage, but treat it like eggs and never move or touch the case while the drive is on

you will be able to recover data and documents , but almost certainly you won't be able to recover programs as you have to do a reinstall of the apps from the original media. - Alternatively you could pop the drive (after recovering data) in a new laptop but besides the pain of upgrading the OS you are into messy area if running windows OEM with the license (ok if both old and new laptop/desktop have the same version)
