Should I wait for Vista?

I'm about to convert my pc into a HTPC with the addition of a WinTV-PVR-500 MCE tv card, Windows MCE and the purchase of an MCE remote control and kepboard.

My question is whether I should do this now or will I have to buy all this stuff again once Vista is introduced?

    All advice appreciated!

Wait for Vista only pre-built systems get the free upgrade so you would end up buying it all over again.

The Vista Home Premium version is the one that comes with MCE the Home Basic version does not.

I see the upgrade from MCE to Vista is already an option with some of the Dell machines. Amazon also lists upgrades although these may be trade only

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Microsoft-Windows-Center-OEM-upgrade/dp/B000KC6T8A/sr=8-4/qid=1166200458/ref=sr_1_4/026-8339183-8375650?ie=UTF8&s=electronics

    This looks more like it

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Microsoft-Windows-Center-OEM-upgrade/dp/B000JTFVM4/sr=8-9/qid=1166200681/ref=sr_1_9/026-8339183-8375650?ie=UTF8&s=electronics

If I buy a Dell with the upgrade coupon will I be able to install this on the PC I want to and just keep the Dell as a server to sit up in the attic?

The idea of having to wait to do this update is killing me!!

    Thanks all

Don't know about those ones on Amazon frankly I didn't know they were putting the coupon in the OEM license packs which are on sale. It looks like to me those are intended for system builders whether you will be able to use the upgrade coupon yourself I cannot say. As an example with Dell the process works by going to this website putting in your Dell tag and they send you the upgrade (which is going Live today for the EU).

You wont be able to use the Vista upgrade from Dell on a non-Dell system.

In order to get Home Premium as the 'free' upgrade your existing OS must be XP MCE 2005 otherwise you will get a different version of Vista.

January the 17th I think is the date for retail Vista so you don't really have too long to wait from now. If you wanted to you could use one of the free media centre programs in the interim like Media Portal for instance.

Let us know how it works out I would be interested to know how the upgrade works with OEM licences not tied to a vendor.

the person who built the machine / installed windows becomes the oem.
the license is tied to the first machine it is installed on.
same as normal xp oem stuff.

the upgrade can be claimed via moduslink and user pays shipping.
the upgrade is linked to the machine that xp is currently installed on.
not technically linked, but via the terms of the eula
thats what i understood from the documnetation anyway :)
