Car making funny noises

I got into my car this morning to go to work and as I began driving I heard a screeching coming from the from wheel. I got out of the car and had a look but couldn't see anything untoward. The car was fine last night. Anyway I took off the wheel and started turning the disc around and it seems as if it's coming from the brakes. Would this mean my brake pads are worn out??

    When were they last replaced?

Could be metal on metal sound, that would be brake pads gone.
