If you have an MP3 file will Itunes convert it to .acc to play on your ipod or will the ipod play the .mp3 file with out converting it?

Th ipod converts the music to it's own format but doesn't leave a copy of that file on your pc (like sonic stage used to/ or still does??).

It will convert WMA's hwoever to M4A or MP3 and you'll be left with 2 versions of your song. best option is to search for all your WMA's, add them to itunes and set your preference to which format you want it copied to (MP3 is best as it can be used on other devices) and Itunes will convert all your music for you. Then search for all your WMA's again and delete them.

Common misconception about the iPod is that you have to use .acc. iTunes will happily play and use .mp3 once you change the settings in iTunes and don't allow it to sort your music.

Its just for an argument I'm having with a friend who uses an MD. He reckons that ipods cant play .mp3 full stop and will convert your music in to .acc and you will have 2 copies of your file. He says if I was right whats the point of Itunes

You should ask your friend to put his money where his mouth is and bet him €50. Obviously WMA's have to be converted what with the built in licensing but MP3's are no problem at all. In relation to the point of iTunes, eh, its there to manage your music collection and sync with your iPod.

I'll have a word with him and see if he's up for a bet!
