I have a Golfworks voucher and may splash out on an electric golf trolley.

Golfworks currently have a Pulsar electric trolley for €299. The guy in Golfworks said that the battery compares to the Golfglider & Powakaddy - i.e about 27 holes.

Has anyone used one of these?

    Just bought one! :)

I actually got mine for 220 but that's a story for another day ;)

I've used it twice and delighted with it so far. It seems to have as much power after 18 as it does starting out. It seems (altho I've never owned one before!) a little slower than some other elec trolleys tho?

But for 299 you won't get a better one I'd say. That includes bag and seat btw if you hadn't already noticed... the seat is worth the ridicule! :)

Cheers - will probably pick it up so.

Golfworks charge €345 with the seat and something else, €299 without...

Do you know somewhere that sells them cheaper?

Are you sure the €299 doesn't include seat? I'd seen the ad and thought it did... I actually bought mine on ibid.ie which is an ebay type auction site that was run by Indo Newspapers for about three weeks a couple months back.

It had a selection of items (sports, homeware etc etc) with all auctions starting and finishing at same time and date...

The items were put up by Irish shops/businesses (in this case, the Elec trolley was put up by golfworks)... thing was, Indo Newspapers didn't really seem to plug it much and it received very little attention and therefore very few bids! Hence, muggins here grabs an elec trolley w. seat and bag and a garden shed for bargain prices...

This is the second time they've run the ibid site I think but I would assume if they do it again they'd advertise it more as businesses are hardly going to commit to giving products that they're losing money on.

... okay, maybe it wasn't a story for another day so! :)

    Yeah, it was definitly €345 - http://www.golfworks.ie/Products/Golf_Trolleys/Pulsar.html

The website also has it for €299, and when I asked what the difference was, I was told it was the seat and one other extra that I cant remember. I might drop over and double check it wasnt a mistake on their part.

That site sounds great, but I got some of those all-in-one vouchers from work and would prefer to use those.

Will defo keep an eye out for that site in future though - cheers

Just bought one ... 249 euro without seat but including cover. Altho advertised spec was 160watt motor and 20ah battery, it came with 180w/24ah.
Looks very much like rebadged 2005ish Motocaddy explorer, now replaced with highly-rated S1.
Looks well made, and is easy to set up. V good value, it seems ... just waiting for a break in the weather to give it a real test.

I don't have a Pulsar but i do have an electric trolley(PK Freeway), my cousin has the one you're talking about, and i used to sell them in McGuirks, and the home truth is basically all Carts are grand, and the Pulsar does exaclty what it says on the tin, sure there are little extras on different brands, and one might be a fraction quicker than the other, but they all work fine, they all carry your clubs for you. personally i think the Powakaddys are a rip off, at the new price of 599 for the Freeway(and thats the normal not the digital, they're going up from 599-650 ) i can't see the value for money over the Pulsar or Mocad trolleys, aparently they are upping the price again to try and dig themselves out of debt, surely loweing the price and being more competitive would make sense.

Not a t'all JR - sure that would only make sense!! Idiots... Crazy money for them too - they can't hit the ball for you!

I'm chuffed with my pulsar I must say. Lookin fwd to the summer when I'm squeezin out as many rounds of golf as physically possible!

i can guarnatee, you'll notice the difference straight away, i used to be falling down dead by the 13th/14th but getting around the 18 now is no bother, i really do subscribe to the take every break you can philosophy (with regards the peripherals of the game, not the rules) the game is hard enough.;)

Quite a difference between the opinions being expressed here and those on the "do you carry or pull your bag?" thread a while back.
Have we all aged so much in a year?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,792 ✭✭✭J.R.HARTLEY

personally i don't think age has anything to do with it, if you can spare yourself the burden of carrying or dragging, then why not?
I use it for medical reasons, i'd never drag a bag 18 holes, but why should normal amatuers not use a motorised trolley anyway? I mean if athletic and fit pros won't even carry their own bag in order to spare themselves any strains or discomfort, why drag out of our joints out and strecth our shoulders lumbering bags we don't have to?
thats the way i look on it.

I got the Pulsar just after Christmas for €249 without the seat - I just thought I'd never use the seat, so didnt bother.

Apologies for the stupid question, but maybe you can clear this up for me. The Pulsar keeps pace with me walking if I'm not walking fast, only strolling. Is this because of the soft ground? Others I play with who have Golf Gliders, are experiencing the same problems.

The battery is fully charged and the wheels are on the right way and seated correctly..

Other than that, I'm delighted with it.

I bought one last weekend and took it for a walk around Killeen on Monday. Delighted with it. Killeen may well be the flattest course I've ever played but even so, the cart was as strong after 18 as it was at the beginning.

My folks have golf gliders and I seem to remember whenever I used them full speed was a fast walking pace. The pulsar doesn't seem as quick and it doesn't seem to be due to soft ground. It still seemed slower driving on the paths.

I got the seat for the extra €40. I figured if I was going to be a lazy sod I may as well be a comlete lazy sod :D

    Meet your brother! :D:D

I found the same with regard the speed alright - but I wouldn't say it's too slow. Just a bit slower than the rest... If I set it off full-speed down the fairway it goes faster than my leisurely walk, so that's fine for me...

While we're on the subject - how long should I expect a brand new battery to last? 6months, a year, two years? I've heard gettin replacement batteries can be tricky/expensive?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,618 ✭✭✭milltown

Well it's guaranteed for a year so I'd expect it to last a year and a day!

Seriously though, my folks have Golf gliders and they got less than a year out of their first batteries, replaced under warranty, but they play a couple of times a week. Since then I think they get about 18 months. There's nothing special about the batteries so I'd say most motor factors should be able to get you one, or else a specialist like Tim Molloy behind Guiness' in Dublin. IIRC they average about €80 - €100.

Next on my to-do list is research what kind of charge/discharge cycle is going to give me the longest life. I seem to recall from my Bolton St. days that a lead acid battery should never be stored in a discharged state but I want to find out if I should leave it on charge or charge it and disconnect it, then just give it a boost before I use it again.

Golf trolleys need "deep cycle" batteries rather that car-type batteries, which are designed for only intermittent bursts of real power. Some battery makers (can't remember which offhand) actually warn about this.

All recommendations for sealed lead-acid batteries that I've seen say always store fully charged, and preferably keep on trickle charge while stored. Most golf trolley battery chargers now seem to automatically set suitable charge/trickle charge rates (three-stage chargers certainly do, and even the presumably cheap charger I got with my Pulsar trolley is three-stage).

American Golf Discount sells suitable batteries here, as do a few other outlets. Google search might help.

On a slightly different tangent here but anyone have advice?

Was about to splash out on a brand new Powacaddy for my pops when a friend of my dads offered him his wifes old one (caddy-matic brand??). It cost next to nothing but needed a new battery which I picked up for €70. The battery charges fine but the trolley wont work?

So toying with the idea of getting it fixed but have no clue where to get it fixed..also I've marked the battery so I don't think it's fit to return!! Would have just bought a new one except I'm landed with this battery. Am I wasting my time trying to get it fixed??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,792 ✭✭✭J.R.HARTLEY

    do a quick google search for caddie-matic, check out their webpage if they have one or the contact number of a dealer online (someones bound to be selling them) and give them a call see if it can be fixed;
A 5 minute google search and a quick phone call could save you a bundle. the powakaddys are ridiculously overpriced.

Tried that JR but with no luck. Did manage to get a number for a guy that does repairs but he's out of the country for a week so I'll see what comes of that.

If anyone else knows of a electric trolley repair place in dublin west area that would be very helpful.

    Cheers

Would anybody know where i could get a spare right hand wheel for one of these buggies?Advance mobility don't have them and golfworks who supply the pulsar machines are closed down:confused:

Golfworks in Dundrum is still open, was a few weeks ago anyway!! Might be worth a try to ring it...

Sorry to say that all the GolfWorks stores in Dublin are closed. Lucan may be having a liquidation sale, but I believe they had very little to liquidate.

Would anyone know of any make of umbrella holder that will fit onto the Pulsar trolley's handle?

I'm referring to the umbrella holder that clips onto your trolley and you can then leave your umbrella in it

    Thanks..
