imac Vs Mac Pro

    The processor.
    2 x 2.0GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeons easily beat 1 x 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.
    Pro (2x2=4) beats, iMac (1x2.16=2.16).

    Also,
Faster graphics chip, at twice the memory.
    Faster DVD drive.

To be honest, and with all respect, if you don't recognise the difference between these two machines, then go for the iMac.
    P.S. Google Xeon chips.
P.P.S. - I'd hate to see the Pro Mac hooked up to a 17" monitor.

    S.

Edit - what do you do? i.e. what are you going to be using the machine for?

Also aside from the (superior) processor, you are paying for the expandability. You can replace/change the hd, gfx and add much more RAM. With the imac everything is integrated so you're kind of stuck with what you get. For some people this as crippling, for others (like me) it isn't a problem.

But it depends, what would you be using it for? Do you really need a macpro? If not I'd go with the imac, they are great value IMO and make good prosumer machine.

You are paying for the expandability.
Consider the iMac similar to a laptop, it's still available but limited space (2xDIMM slots).
    Sexy vs Price.

And Apple's pre-installed RAM uses both of these slots. I didn't realise this when I got my imac, I assumed they would have had at least one empty slot. So to get my mac up to 2gb I'm gonna have to remove the two chips already in it

senecurea, is it so quiet here that you are quoting/replying to you own posts? :p

They only use both slots on the lowest-end iMac, as far as I am aware of? It's to do with Intel GMA950 graphics running faster when both channels are utilised.

No they do it on all of the current range. And I've heard the speed increase from using two identical RAM chips is negligible so I assume Apple do it to save money. i.e 2 x 512 chips is cheaper than 1 x 1GB. It's annoying as it means you have to get all your RAM from Apple unless you want the hassle of selling the 2 x 512 chips on ebay or somewhere. And 2gb chips are extortion right now so getting it up to 3gb isn't an option really.

I love my imac but I wish Apple had found some way to squeeze another two slots in there or at the very least use a single RAM chip.

Thanks for the replies lads. I never coped that the macpro had two dual core chips rather then a single one....

Edit - what do you do? i.e. what are you going to be using the machine for?

Will be used for graphics programs. Photoshop, Illustrator etc. Nothing to complex as its for college work. I'd say the imac would be up to the task but I have managed to get my hands on a 20" monitor for nowt so if its only a little but more expensive I might go for it...

Anyone know when the last shipping dates for xmas will be? And lastly.... whats the story with hard drives? They seem very expensive compared to what I can buy for the PC....

Do you really have to buy before Christmas? I'd wait until Macworld before buying anything now. Its only three weeks away and you never know what Jobs could announce.

bear in mind that if you will be using either machine for photoshop and illustrator, the current version of these programs is not available in universal binary and don't run very well on intel based macs.

i hear that when run on a mac pro it's bearable, but on anything else it's painful (i tried running PS CS1 on my macbook and couldn't take it).

CS3 beta was released today, and apparently it's a screamer on the intel machines, but until it's released to the consumer you will be frustrated with CS1 and 2,
