Ok this is very far from a review so I'll put this here. I bought this DVD last Christmas and never got around to watching it, until the other night. I'm not sure what I was expecting...well I'd heard all the plaudits about it being one of the greatest films ever made, and certainly one of the greatest Christmas films but it left me slightly unfulfilled at the end.

James Stuart's performance was a joy to watch and I especially loved all the bits that have been parodied by the likes of the Simpsons that I finally got now (No no...the money's not here it's in Bill's house, and Geffrey's....lol)
Maybe in some way I was expecting Potter to get his upance at the end and the rallying around of all the people to give money to George left me feeling a bit disappointed...

What did you all think of this one?

Absolute classic imo. Christmas isn't Christmas without it - and no doubt it'll be on five different channels at once on the day, as per usual.

The ultimate warm fuzzy feeling movie.

I got around to watching this a couple of Christmases ago and agree that it's a great Christmas movie (although I'm not quite sure if I'd watch it outside of that week). Good performances and a few classic lines and a great "feel good" ending that isn't too schmaltzy or forced. Plus an evil Harry Potter to boot :)

I agree with the OP, I decided to rent it out last Xmas with much the same expectations but was left pondering to myself "was that a good film" and I think if you need to ask yourself that the answer is evident.

Added to that I'm not a great fan of the ould black n white classics apart from Laural and Hardy so to sum up; boo-urns.

I've never seen it. I might watch it this year, depending on my company at the time it's on. My guess is 'boo-urns' will be my reaction also, though.

How can anyone 'boo-urns' It's A Wondful Life?

Hearts of stone lads, hearts of stone.

I've never seen it either. I've always had the feeling it's much better known in America than over here. I'm fairly sure a lot of people I know would never have seen it.

The first time i saw "life is beautiful" i thought it was "It's a Wonderful Life".

I was expecting a happy drama and got concentration camps.

eventually got around to "It's a Wonderful Life" - a great film. Love the sense of the movement of time in it.

"life is beautiful" is harder to watch but is also a must see film

Actually, I was quite happy (cheering in fact) when they
killed Roberto Benigni at the end of that one
    . What an annoying man!

Its a Wonderful Life is my favourite film, regardless of the season!!!

Great film, with a great Jimmy Stuart performance binding it all together. I always wonder if the connection to christmas kind of kills this movie as anybody who hasnt seen it is going to expect a typical happy familys schmalz-fest. Lets not forget that the film is about a guy who tries to kill himself!!!!

Splutter what? Are you telling me you didn't well up when JuJu sez
Every time a bell rings an angel gets his wings
Truthfully if I get teary eye'd in three places
When Jimmy declares his love to Donna Reed, when The old woman looking for 11 dollars and 75 cents, and when he reads the inscription on the copy of Huck Finn
Disappointed? Man no soul, no soul whatsoever.

I like that there isn't some neat strings tied up ending. Potter doesn't get his comeupance, he just remains a lonely bitter man with his money, and Jimmy Stewart gets to realise what the true value of life is. Man I'm getting choked up just thinking about it...
