Ever SHOCKED by poorness of opponents?

Maybe I'm becoming a poker snob, but I just played two online, 6 dollar, 10 man sit and gos in a row, and I was literally SHOCKED by the poorness of my opposition. I actually had to double check to see if i hadn't accidentally entered a playmoney game, they were just BRUTAL. No complaints here though, I made a few quid. Wish I hadn't blown all my bank-roll sports betting and maybe I'd give a higher money game a shot.

I'm only ever astounded by my own poor play. Take an MTT online. I'm in position with 78d and limp. SB makes standard raise to 400 [blinds 50 / 100] folded around to me I decide to see a flop as I have position and chips. But SB has me covered. Flop comes eight high. SB bets pot and I figure he has high cards and is making a continuation bet. I go all in so as not to confuse him. He calls with Ace high [Jack kicker] Ace on turn and Jack on river. He then berates me for my poor play. He's right obviously if I bet lower he'd have had the discipline to fold. :p

If people are bad players, then surely you shouldn't have a problem taking their money?

I'd consider myself a bad player. I went to the fitz one night, a wednesday I think. I was there for something to do, not specifically to win money and not to satisfy my non existent gambling problem - all it was, myself and a friend wanted to try it out. It was €25 buy in and €20 rebuy. I made several flukey hands and made a few good ones. There were snide remarks made about how some hands I was involved in and towards me also. I haven't been back since because I don't feel like dealing with the ****.

I talked to one of the dealers on here about it and he said that my play was off the wall, I can't remember off hand, it was bohs something. I took heed of what he said but tbh, I haven't had the desire to pick up cards since then. I was really annoyed at how people can be assholes in such a low stakes game. He even said that a few of them were members on here so if you think you were there last night and were making comments, cheers!! I came 13th out of 50 which I felt was alright.

So speaking from the side you're referring to OP, a bad player/noob/casual player like myself, what do I do? I've no desire to go and learn all the % and stuff like that, I simply want a nice night out playing cards.

Kenny unfortunately this is more common now towards new players than it was a couple of years ago.Everyone here started out like yourself at some stage and made strange calls/ bad plays. It's part of learning the game.

I have no problem telling someone what they did wrong or what they might of done if i'm asked, especially if i notice their relatively new to the game.

I hate this condoning of new players. New players should be encouraged to play , not be scared off just because a couple of regulars think their mr bigshot( that's why their playing a 20 euro rebuy, too much money).

Kenny i can promise that not everyone will treat you like this, but like anywhere you will find morons no matter what you do.

I hope you try the live game scene a couple more times, you will improve your game and hopefully get a cash in the future. Ignore all the wannabe phil hellmuth's, because that's what they are, wannabes

I'm surprised at you Mick, giving out about people condoning new players. :p

I somehow think you meant to say 'Condemning' instead of 'Condoning', but I couldn't let it go without pointing it out, as I am a spelling bigshot.

Maybe it was a once off but from what you guys have said it doesn't sound like it. If/when I go back, I'll just bring my ipod with me.......I admit it's ignorant but I'd rather not listen to the **** I did the last time.

To be honest, if I was playing and some guy doing random off-the-wall (to quote yourself) things took the bulk of my chips hitting a miricle runner runner or some such, and thought they played the hand perfectly, I wouldn't be too happy either. I wouldn't be ignorant about it as that is not something I do, but you would know I wasn't impressed.

It begs the question though, why bother playing if you have no desire to improve your game? If it is only for the social aspect then fair enough (but wearing an iPOD takes that away too). I honestly think if you play and do random senseless things then you can't be surprised too much if people get somewhat upset with you. Don't get me wrong, they are not entitled to abuse you in any sense, and of course you are entitled to play your cards and chips the way you want to, but it is very frustrating for others, whether they are 'regulars' or other relatively new people who are trying to play in the best manner they can.

If the things that people were getting upset about were things such as constatly string betting, constantly acting out of turn, or simple procedural things like this then that would be your issue to sort out mostly I believe.

Saying all that though, I have no idea what you did that was perceived as 'wrong' on that particular occasion.

Kenny one of two things will happen to you. Either you'll go away from poker... which is fine. Or you'll get involved in poker. I suspect it might end up being the latter as you've bothered to post on here. In which case there will come a time when you'll go - ah right... That's why people were getting annoyed. - It seems to be a right of passage. I remember making some stupid plays to two outers in pots I shouldn't have been involved in and then some "Experienced" player reading me the riot act. It happens to the best and worst of us. But as Dom says if you have a desire to improve it will soon sort itself out. And maybe things have changed somewhat and people were more tollerant when I started out a full three years ago. Stick with it and don't don the headphones just yet as between the venom and spittle they may be giving some free lessons. And remember nobody likes to moan more than a poker player.
    good luck.

    Dom touche to you sir!;)

Lloyd that guy you described is exactly the type of player I hate.
    moron couldn't even slowroll properly.

Kenny not everyone will treat you like that, have a bit of faith in the poker community, you could of made some very strange plays that ahem "surprised" the other players

Not being condescending at all here but surely it is +EV for a player to suck out and for him to believe that it is because he played the hand well.

Surely in the long run it is better that he keeps making mistakes as opposed to him learning from them?

Surely we want people getting it in when a huge dog that they can suck out from there is poker

I did not act out of turn and the rest of my table etiquette was perfect. I've watched enough poker to know hot to act.

I got impatient and made a stupid bet as I was looking to go home. I think I had a 3,4 suited or something similar. I got 2 pair off the flop. When I won the hand, some asshole turns around and said "Maybe if I start playing **** I'll start winning!!!" Absolutely no need for that at all regardless of how bad my play was!! Just to note he wasn't even involved in the hand. I had doubled up after my my very first hand that night on pocket queens, after that I played it smart until this hand.

I do like the game but I'm not looking to make living from it, it's a past time that doesn't cost me much. I do appreciate the advice and if I get the time I'll go back in over christmas to play a game. I would play online but I'm at a comp screen all day in work and it just wouldn't be healthy for me to do it when I got home.

Sounds like you did nothing wrong except take heed of the comments then. I have often got bored myself and gone all in blind or raised 3 times in a row blind or the like myself. Then again, I am past caring what people think. I know it is chastening if you know no one there and someone makes snide comments to you, but the best reaction is to genuinely not let them get to you.

    GL.

I remember that Kenny, generally it is bad players who give out about other peoples play, the ipod does the trick if your stuck with them, theres normally a good atmosphere in the Fitz tournies, try the 50 with one rebuy on a Friday if you're around, theres more regulars and people on here that wouldnt bother with a 20rebuy.

Kenny, the topic was about "being shocked" at poor play not taking the head off a n00b... I think thats an important subtle difference. I've learned to just say nothing when I see awful play and simply adjust my game to take advantage of it if I can. You can still have a laugh and a joke with someone who doesnt know Big Slick from The Hammer!

Its a pity you didnt have a good time , but I think if you go along to any of the boards home games and play or keep going to the Fitz you will find its much better usually.

What you are describing is really just players "venting" their frustrations at their bad luck. Kicking you (verbally) is not acceptible but its understandable.
Usually its the bad players who do it and often without understanding the odds themselves. If they start on with the "How could you call that", I often just say "hey you paid to see, lessons are extra!!"

Last night myself and Kevin Maloney were witness to pretty awful play but the table was having a blast and we were chatting and joking with everyone too (despite looking askance at each other occasionally when second pair no kicker was raking in 70 quid pots!). Dont mind the "all hat and no cattle" brigade, they just want to make themselves look good by putting others down, real players dont do that.

Scott Gray once told me he was playing with a bunch of drunken stag party guys, lots of fun was had (they recognised him from the telly) and he got horrible outdrawn in one hand to cheers from the table. He told me he cheered along with them because if they arent having fun they wont stay and they wont come back.

    DeV.
