For all you degenerates that cant get enough of online poker. If your like me and spend all day on a computer but cant download anything onto your officemachine because of restrictions(IT goons). There was a website recently featured on BBC news www.logmein.com. It remotely accesses your pc at home providing you leave it on and are connected to the internet.

I installed it on my home machine. I tested in work today. Works a treat. It shows your desktop at home in a browser and you can access applictaions and transfer files etc etc. So from a poker point of view i went straight on to PPP and played a few hands. it is a little slow but not bothersome.

The website only gives a free trial for 30 days or 120 minutes whichever comes first. To purchase the product for a single pc the price is a reasonable 70$ for a year. 2 10$ STT's and its paid for!!!!!!

I mean it would be certainly useful for evenings/ weekends and also unfortuntately im in over xmas so it would also come in handy

Anyway i would appreciate any comment form people who have already tried a system like this or similar, or try this.

    Cheers

P.S. Watch out for the Boss!!

I looked this up briefly today, cause I was bored, but didn't look into it too much.

Do you only install this on your own machine at home and just access that from a browser or do you have to install something at work? I can't imagine my big bad corporate WebSense fun website blocker thingy will like it too much.

I can't say it isn't something I have thought about doing though if I could get away with it.

I work in I.T. and can tell you that unless you really fcuk your PC up or work in bank where there is a load of paranoia about internet access generally you are ok.
That log thing is the same as PCanywhere and is the best way of getting around companies websense software.
Simple reason being that the only web site which shows up on the company site will be this site as in reality you are accessing all the websites from home.
I never have played too much poker at work ( U gotta have a break somewhere !!) but I remember spending a lot time playing championship manager in my youth when I should have been working.

Just a word of warning, I if came across this while auditing a Company, I would have to flag it as a serious breech of security. File tran from an unknow host to a corportate PC, coupled with the reverse connection nature of these type of products is usually enough to get you fired (if the company have an acceptable usage policy)
Other than this, knock yourself out!;)

The "IT goons" are trying to do their job.

You should give it a go.

You just install on your machine at home and then acces it in work through there website. They act as a server. So your just using a browser in work.

cheers for the comments so far. I would like to hear more about the security aspect.

    thanks

What do you want to know?

The information passing through the end to end connection is secure.

Can the "IT goons" in you're job detect if you're using it.

    Of course.

I am assuming that you access a website with a certain name in its address each time you want to log into your machine at home? If this is the case then your useage can be tracked and thus blocked through webfiltering software.
Its a pretty serious breach of MOST companies policies also and I would not suggest using it, never mind the fact that getting caught using it wouldnt do much for your career.
Based on the their own document here:
    https://secure.logmein.com/wp_lmi_security.pdf
it is pretty secure but I dont think that is the point in this case.

Ive been using it for a good few months. I dont pay though, there is a free version and it does everything you need with the exception of direct file transfers to and from the 2 pcs your using. You can get around this by emailing the file.

Basically you just go to www.logmein.com, enter your login details in the browser, then it displays which computers you can connect to, you enter the password to the computer your connecting to and he presto. You can even go full screen and its like your using the remote computer live.

It can be a tad slow sometimes but thats all down to connection speed and pc specs on both ends so as long as its broadband and decent pcs shouldnt have too much problems.

Id imagine there are plenty of people that use this legitemely within a company so a sitewide ban is unlikely, also i doubt that they can prove anything other than you accessed www.logmein.com (can any i.t tech confirm) Its very handy for me to access workfiles and viceversa and very helpful to fix a relations pc in another county or country etc

Also its alot more user friendly than VNC or similar programs where you have to program i.p address etc

    I retired recently.

If you are observed playing poker in work you will more than likely be sacked, and not with a good reference. The reference might say "sacked for abuse of our internet policy" and it might not say what type of sites. Or if you get a warning it will not do your prospects in the place much good.

Did you sign an agreement to obey the IT rules of the company? We had to agree to abide by the rules every time we logged on.

What you are proposing is a bit like sky-diving. Only two possibilities, one nice, one not so nice.

What are you trying to gain? Not worth it.

Ya, it's not worth it, and you do have to install stuff, even if only an ActiveX control, and that in itself is a breach of company rules where I work. I might try it on one of the generic pcs though at work just to see if it can work from there.

Probably just asking for trouble tempting myself, but sure there you go.

in a company I was working with recently (we had a fairly loose IT policy, but obviously playing poker in work breached it slighty :D )

What we basically did was take remote screen shots during the logmein session as we couldn't see what the traffic was exactly.

    Some people _were_ playing poker.

Some people used to look at gay porn in peace.

    Some people were sacked.

    I lol'd
