Inspiron 1300 Memory Upgrade

I've been looking at upgrading the RAM in my Inspiron 1300 to 2Gb. Dell came back at me with the ridiculous price of €520 for the RAM so I've been looking on-line (which I knew I'd have to do anyway tbh) and come up with a few options:

    Crucial
    http://www.crucial.com/eu/store/mpartspecs.asp?mtbpoid=D35981A2A5CA7304
Including delivery, this pack of two memory modules would cost me €297.

    Shop4Memory
    http://www.memory-configurator.com/memory/DELL/TS1GDL3748.html
This is Transcend memory and two of them delivered would cost me €266.36

Seems like a no-brainer to go with Shop4Memory but I'm wondering if there's any major difference between the two brands, if Crucial 'pair' their memory and if this would make a difference or even if there's something better out there I haven't found. Any RAM experts out there in boards.ie land?

Does the 1300 support that much memory? dell site says it supports up to 1gb, but if dell do the upgrade I guess it does.

My other comment would be is it worth investing that much money in a 1300. Maybe going to a 1 gb make sense, but what do you need 2gb for, vista rtm seems to runs decent on 512mb and should be fine with 1gb. If you want a real performance increase it might be worth investing in a new laptop with a gig of ram instead of buying more ram. Maybe I'm mixing up the spec of the laptop and am way off base, for a laptop the transcend sticks from shop4memory, qualitywise should be fine i think

According to the Dell sales rep it'll take 2gb. Asked about it when I contacted them for the shocking price they wanted to charge me!

TBH, 2gigs is probably over-kill but I do a lot of multi-tasking on it which afaik is more RAM dependent than CPU...?

Just looked at the dell price again wow, multi-tasking wise a dual core would give much bigger performance gain I think but you'd be spending a lot more money

Yeah, Dell sold me the laptop for less than four hundred euros so I'm not about to spend more than that for a memory upgrade.

I'd like a more powerful machine alright but really can't justify spending the money for a dual-core or any kind of decent laptop really. Essentially I was just stuck for ideas for my Dad who asked what I wanted for a Christmas present and thought I might upgrade the laptop while he's paying!

    Thanks for the help btw!

Yeah, I know that situation where the days left to christmas are running out and you're being force to decide what you want, maybe you should secure the cash first and then go shopping for a Wii :D

Aha, hadn't thought of that, think I'm just going to get 1gb of RAM and some cash towards the Wii. :)

If anyone's interested in 256MB of RAM for an Inspiron 1300, I'll be putting it up on adverts.ie after Christmas.
