Anyone get a movie file playing in the photo channel and if so, can you tell me what format it was?

I've tried .mov, .wmv, .mpg and none work!
Better be a firmware upgrade for this....

Try this app to convert. Haven't tried it myself though yet, as I don't have a SD card, or a reader for the PC

    the Wii uses Apple Quicktime.

    www.apple.com/quicktime

Mac users you simply need quicktime reg number (www.serialz.to) and you can then save any of the avi files as quicktime movies and your sorted ;):)

Yup, I read that but in real life, the system tells me that .mov files are "unsupported" or "unknown".

Has anyone actually managed to get a movie running though?

And if so, is the quality good?

It has to be converted to an AVI I think. AVI is a wrapper not a codec so it could support .mov but require it to be an AVI.

It has got to be AVI to work, I think I saw some free software on the computer /tech page for converting movies to AVI.

does it read them from memory stick ?

I dont have an SD card yet (still in the post from 7day shop)

If so I can mess around with quicktime settings so I can find a working format.

All my .avi's are divx or xvid.... :(

Ok - no usb thumb support. :(

Just borrowed the SD mem card out of a camera to try it.

I first tried a .mov file downloaded from IGN (Rayman video review) and it didnt work

So I openend it in Quicktime on the mac, and re-saved it as a .mov and put it onto the mem card, and it worked in the Wii photo booth. Why they cant have a seperate wii media player channel ?

640x480 video file using Jpeg B video codec in Quicktime .mov
Took about 5 seconds to convert/save...

I then tried an episode of family guy on .avi divx
Opened in Quicktime pro and exported as a .mov with same settings and yes it worked too.....

So it does work, just make sure its the right quicktime compressor and format.

This is on a mac, it should be the same for windows, but XP being XP I wouldnt count on it.... ;)

Could you load the movie onto the sd card through the camera or do you have a seperate reader?

Belkin MemCard reader for my mac.

    ----

So here are the full setting list.

In case anyone wants to know, here is what you need to encode your videos as for them to be playable in the Wii. I've used Quicktime Pro for this by the way.

    Video
    - Motion JPEG B
    - 24 or 25 FPS depending on NTSC/PAL source (actual number optional) Usually just let it decide itself
    - Colour (also optional)
    - Medium Quality (again optional but Medium is still pretty good and it keeps file sizes down)
    - Deinterlaced (optional again but I recommended it)
    - 480p is top quality (848x480 resolution)

    Sound
    - Linear PCM
    - Stereo or mono
    - 48.000kHz (optional but I got sound distortion otherwise)
    - Normal quality
    - 8 bit sample size
    - Big Endian
    - Unsigned

Simply a case of open up any file, divX, wmv etc.. and say export and choose quicktime movie and then options and make sure these are the settings. Works everytime for me.

They use Quicktime, but it has to be in a Microsoft AVI wrapper.

That is a bit dumb ...

yeah its a bit mad, you can defiently tell it was an afterthought.

Same as MP3's. It will play your mp3's as long as they are in a slideshow to photo's but doesnt have a standalone MP3 player

Sound idea's - very very badly implemented.

Give us a media channel Nintendo.

For mac users not used to Quicktime.

Just updated a program on my mac called visual hub from 1.1.6 to it's later version 1.1.7 and it has the wii conversion setting there for you under AVI tab, simply drag anything into it and select wii from drop down profile and your sorted.

    Great little program.

I assume it is only a matter of time before Nintendo or some 3rd party create a new channel that supports Divx/Xvid and streaming off a server.

It would be really could if someone could create a MytvTV front end on it.

    Maybe not.

Remember the wii doesnt support 54mb Wifi G networking at all - only 11mb wifi B. And that's 11mb at it's highest support, if your wii is a distance away from your access point that will drop down significantly.

This may not be enough bandwidth to support wireless movie streaming.

Really? Does it not have a G compatable Wi-fi card made by Mitsumi?

Here they tell someone to upgrade their router to a G network ...

According to wikipedia the wii's wifi is b/g compatible

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 374 ✭✭scrapland

Wiki is wrong on this one. Wifi in wii is B only, its been the focus of many discussions and outrage on the nintendo boards.

What they mean is it can join a on a B/G network - but 'all' the network then drops down to B :(

G only networks do not work at all.

    It's a missed opportunity.

I've gotten streaming video working on B in the past, you are correct it isn't great but does work. Also there is a USB wired ethernet adaptor coming from Nintendo soon that might improve things.
