Backing up computer entirely

I've just bought myself an USB external HDD (WD Mybook 250GB for anyone who's interested). I'd like to somehow create an image of my laptop hard drive on this, so that if my laptop fecks up and I need to reformat, I can just bang all the stuff, settings and configurations back on without too much hassle.

Problem is, I don't have a clue how to go about this. Any suggestions?

    Hi Ya

How about trying to use Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image and creating an image file of the system on the removable disk.. There is a large number of threads on this on boards and a simple google will turn up numerous pages also.

    Regards
    Tommy

Give DriveImageXML a run. You can create a bootup cd using BartPE and add the DriveImageXML plugins to it. Boot disk is easy enough to create and the backup process is fool proof and you can also copy to a network drive. I've used it for backup and restore and no problems! Instructions are here

i would say dont go near norton ghost, it is rubbish. i paid good money for the latest version and it only worked once. it has turned into one of those programs that gives you grief when you turn on the pc with all sorts of criptic error messages.

I've had great success with ghost. I have a 'ghost32.exe' file, 2MB in size which i store on a USB pendrive. I boot up the PC/laptop from a BART CD along with the USB pen inserted.

Navigate to the USB pen and run the exe and off I go. Flawless so far. The Acronis system looks very good also. OR by using a MiniPE BART disc; ghost, acronis and a few other drive image programs are built-in already.

Ghost is pretty much the standard app for this. I'm surprised you had problems with it. That said I don't like Nortons other apps, so maybe they've changed the latest version of Ghost.
