Ok christmas is coming and i was thinking about getting an effects pedal. I have been playing for about 7 months now and was wondering what is a good pedal for around the 100euro mark. I was looking at the zoom g1x or zoom g2

Oh and i have a schecter omen 6 and a microcube

    Thanks

Oh god, stay well away from those zoom pedals!

The effects aren't going to be any better than what the Cube already has to offer, so it'll probably be a waste of money.

If I were you, I'd consider getting something that your cube doesn't have, such as a Wah, Volume or Whammy pedal. Any one of those would be an excellent addition, and frankly, expression pedals like those are fantastic fun. ;)

    Hope that helps.

I completely agree with Karl, though I wouldnt bother with the volume pedal myself...:)

Those zoom pedals at that price range suck, and definately wont be better than the microcube effects.

Thanks guys I think i might save up and get that whammy pedal

what exactly does a volume pedal do?

    Thanks

Just regulates the volume of your signal. Want it full signal, step on it all the way. Want to be a bit quieter, step it off a bit. I used to use one in my old band, was useful enough but it sucks tone like nobody's business.

Yeah and in all honesty its not much fun if thats what you are after :)

My favourite effect is wah (not counting distortion as its such a standard effect I consider it essential). Wah is the solo king :)

Gotta love the Wah. Had a Vox wah, picked it up for a bargin, loaned it to a mate for 2 days and came back deader than vanilla ice's career so off being fixed at mo.

Stay away from those zoom multi effects, i had one when i was starting guitar and i felt that the effects were unusable even at a begginer level, ened up being a paper weight so i sold it, got nice shiney stomp boxes and then when i switched to bass sold them all....kinda makes me sad really :(

Ok, you know when you turn the volume knob on your guitar right down, pick a note, then turn the volume up, and you get that lovely synth/violin kinda quality? (Volume swells)

Essentially, the volume pedal will do the same thing as the knob on your guitar, but having that function in pedal form opens up amazing possibilities for volume swells, you can do far more elaborate things than what's possible with just the knob. Get me?

When I do use effects, I'll use volume even more than I would wah. So it's definetly something to check out, or look into. ;)

I keep meaning to get a volume pedal myself. I do a lot of ebow trickery with the volume knobs (I lie the guitar flat so the ebow just rests on the strings and doesn't have to be held, leaving my picking hand free to play with my knob, ahem) but a pedal would be far more useful.

Karl, do you use that Morley? Have you looked at any other models/brands?

Nope, just use the Pod XT Live. ;)

Wah all the way. The definative sound for messing about in solos or funking the hell out of song.

With your current set up I'd go for that. As was mentioned before, budget multi effects units can't compete soundwise with the cube. The only advantage they have is the footswitchability (is that a word?) but even still some lower end models don't allow a clean switch or allow patch skipping.

Get the Wah for now, then go either of two routes, keep adding units when the financial situation allows it or save up for a kickass multi like the afforementioned POD XT live or a GT-8. The quality of sound in these now wins for me, plus the functionality of having every set up stored.

Volume pedals are only really any use when used in conjunction other effects like delay and reverb for lovely violining. (See Incubus - Morning View for violining all over the shop!!) As Karl said it can be done with the guitar's volume knob etc. but pedal so easy!!

To sum up, Wah is your friend.

Be picking up a volume pedal soon meself. My bass has a perfect setting that I like to keep with the volume knobs, and I adjust the rest with the amp. But I hate changing either between songs, and playing 'Ziggy Stardust' with the volume set for 'Detroit Rock City' kinda sucks. Not to mention the extra ooomph I need for the Godzilla solo. So volume pedal it is!

Volume pedal is very handy for live playing, but for sheer fun-ness I'd agree with the wah.

I've got a G2 myself, and have to say i'm very happy with it, it sounds much much better than the older plasticy zooms

I also use an e bow with a volume pedal...handy with a bit of delay too, interesting stuff.

Get a SuperShifter or a Harmonist pedal, adds a second note to the ebow and makes it sound kind of like an organ, very nice.

Have you got the e bow with the added harmonic function? its cool. I want an octaver, maybe the POG but I havn't got the cash sadly.

The ebow plus? Or something newer and more exciting?

If you don't know what something does, why would you even consider it? Stick to something you might actually want.

Personally, if I was to buy a new Wah, I'd go for the Bad Horsie or Tremonti Wah. Morley are meant to be excellent.

As a stocking filler, you might want to check this one out. For the sake of €20, it good be worth it to see if the volume pedal is your kinda thing or not, and still have enough money left over to invest in a really good wah.

With your new budget I'd reccomend this

I've seen it get pretty good reviews. You get your Wah but also a good few more goodies too.

I keep promising and not delivering, but a review and sound samples of the Jimi pedal are forthcoming. I just have to overcome my Warcraft/movies/Schecter addictions first.

The pedal has a few idiosyncracies (the wah is only available on some, not all, of the settings) but overall it is class. I was scared after I bought it because I listened to the sound samples on musiciansfriend and they sounded very model-y. But lemme tell ya, the sounds are warm and alive when you've got it hooked up to an amp.

One of the clean sounds gives me the punchiest, most Stratocasterish sound I've ever heard in my life.

The 'Voodoo Chile' sound (with wah) is worth the price of the pedal alone.

E Bow plus. 2 note harmonies on the one string. Coolness.

Yeah, I've got the ebow plus but it doesn't work that well harmony-wise for me.
