I was thinking of getting my parents a weekend break for Christmas but am unsure where would be good but still affordable.
    Can anybody give some suggestions?

    Have a look here:
    http://www.arrowtours.ie/

I've used them in the past on several occasions and found them very helpful.
They specialise in city breaks. Did you have anywhere in mind for the folks?
If it was me I'd consider Amsterdam (there's more than the redlight district and coffee shops and has plenty to keep one's parents busy with museums, canal cruise etc) Stockholm, Copenhagen or the usual suspects in E. Europe.
    Good specials on the site:

Give them a call tomorrow and see if they do gift vouchers if you'd prefer to leave the deciding up to the folks. If you book a holiday I always find a Lonely Planet/Rough Guide for the destination with the tickets inside is a good idea.

    Is it just that simple?
Or is there something I'm missing?

How difficult do you want it to be? :D

If you know for example that they can go away on a
given weekend, book it for those dates. Weekend
around Paddy's Day could be a good option.

If you're worried whether say the 3rd weekend in Feb (random date!)
doesnt suit them then get a gift voucher and give it to them along with
a print out of the page I linked with the specials. They can then
ring up and book whatever and whenever takes their fancy!

Maybe have a chat with your folks now and tell them to keep a certain
weekend free...... just dont tell them why! If they have their passports
in order and you have the tickets what more do they need.

    Best of luck with all

PS: Look at it this way, it's the same as secretary in work booking a flight and hotel for
you in say London for a course/meeting in March.

    True.
It just seemed too good to be true...in convenience like.
    Thanks again.
