DVD burner problem

Got my new burner there over the weekend, a Plextor PX755A. It installed ok and I updated the firmware grand. When I try and burn something though, my burner sounds like its reving up to max speed then stoping and repeating this for a minute or so.

In Alcohol it fails saying "Disk spin error" or something like that after about a minute. In DVD decrypter, it takes about 1:30 mins before it will eventually rev up to full speed, maintain the revs and start burning.Even then it never quite reaches the rated speed I said to burn the disc at.

For example, I was burning a dvd-r 16x at 12x but it only ever reached 11.6x at the very end, before that it was much slower. It also drops speed about halfway through the burn down to 1x and it sounds like the driver has stopped spinning. The burner also makes quite a lot of noise, like a high powered sander or something :(

It was sent through An Post so do you think it got a few knocks or something? Or could it be something else?

    Sounds broke to me.

But on the speed not. It is very rare you will ever hit the full speed. 11.6X is actually pretty good for a 12X disc.

DVD's burn discs in stages at different speeds typically a high speed burn will start off at somewhere around 6x then climb to 8x and finally towards the end of the disc it will reach 15x. Often the average write speed is around 12x.

As for loud drives well they are like that when burning at high speed.

Dropping to x1 in the middle of the burn is a sign that the WOPC (walking optimum power control) has deemed the media to poor to burn at the selected speed. So it kicks it down to a slow speed in an attempt to save the disc from being a coaster.

Sounds like bad media to me I would try changing the brand of discs you are using for something else to see if the situation improves.

Oh and install PlexTools that came with the DVD writer and make sure that Autostrategy is set to auto in the software this will allow the writer to build optimal write strategies for the media it successfully burns this may help if you can complete a burn of the media your currently using.
