As the title says I'm spending about €170 on a budget/beginners digital camera for a family member and while I've found a few on Pixmania I've no idea what they are like "in the flesh" wrt to picture quality.

If anyone can recommend a camera that meets my budget and bonus points available if I can purchase said camera in Dublin City Centre.

    Many thanks,

    Viking

I've been doing quite a bit of research on this recently and settled on the Sony Cybershot w50 for the missus. Better still, I managed to pick it up in Argos at the weekend for 225 - about the same as you'd pay online once postage is taken into consideration. It seems they've got reduction on a lot of their digital cameras now so it might be worth checking them out. The W30 s the same with a slightly smaller screen and may come in closer to your budget.

Alternatively, the Samsung Digimax I6 is getting great reviews at the moment and should be very close to your budget.

Looks good, I like that its a bit bigger than some of the other smaller ones so it should be easier to hold more naturally

Can you charge the batteries while they are in the camera? Does it have a power supply in order to charge them? I'd prefer to avoid having to remove batteries from the camera in order to charge them.

tipper1 can you find out what model the camera is?

Thanks for the suggestions so far!

Have spotted the ACER CS-6531 N on Pixmania, can't find any reviews of it on google and I'm not sure how well known Acer are for their digital cameras.

I like the fact that it has a lithium battery especially.

Anyone picked up one of these Acer cameras and like to comment on it?

Need to buy/order shortly in time for Xmas so will have to make a decision sooner rather than later.

    Thanks again,

Thanks to you, sir, I just saved myself 50 euro! I bought W50 from a shop in George St (won't say the name...) with a random pouch and a 256mb pro duo for 289!! Then I see your post - reserved one at Argos for 225, returned the other one to the shop (oh, they were unreal, absolutely no apologies, or offer to match the price or anything like that..!! Only in Dublin...!!) and picked up the camera. Case, strap and 1GB pro duo will cost about 30 euro on eBay!

All this for a camera that sells for $200 in the US!!

    Merry Christmas!!

Dunnes are doing a HP camera + photo printer package reasonably cheaply at the moment - may be worth looking at.

Interesting, any idea on the model or price?

Also it seems as though all the camera's on pixmania within my budget do not come with a charger to charge the batteries within the phone itself. I assumed all decently branded cameras would have chargers supplied with them, makes finding the "right one" a pain...

Ideally, I'd like a camera with the following features:

    4-6MP
Lithium battery or NiMH batteries *with charger*
    Priced less than €170

Can't believe I'm having so much trouble finding one...

Shopping for cameras before I found that Olympus and Fuji offered the best cameras for low price. Kodak was another brand that was cheap but never liked the bulky style. If you want a better quality of camera the canon or nikon would be a good choice. Pentax aint too bad either. I'd be careful going for some of the other cheap brands
I've bought from pixels in dublin before, they have two shops i think, probably not as cheap as on-line but not too bad www.pixels.ie

fuji and olympus do good cams but then you're stuck with xd, the most expensive mem format.

Looking around, at reviews etc., the PANASONIC Lumix DMC-LS2 silver looks good. http://www.pixmania.com/ie/uk/188260/art/panasonic/lumix-dmc-ls2-silver.html

    Cost 133.35 + ship 13.9 = ~ 147
    Then head to 7dayshop.com

    Dane-Elec branded Secure Digital Memory Card - SD 1GB - UK's LOWEST
    PRICE for £7.99
    And PC10 Charger Kit with 8 x AA 2300mAh Ni-Mh Batteries - MEGA DEAL !
    PRICE for £8.99
    + £4 to ship

    = 147€ + £21 (=~ €30) = ~ €180

Fuji do the best compact cameras by a long ways at the moment, they really have sorted their SuperCCD for the F30. I bought one recently, and I must say it comes quite close to a Canon EOS 10D I get the loan of sometimes. Argos are doing it for €270. The more basic, but very similar F20 is a good bit cheaper.

I bought a 5mp Samsung Digimax in Germany last month for a relative. For €99 it has fantastic quality and a decent optical zoom! Amazing value, although it has started hanging after using the flash! :(

Get the latest Argos flyer. They've some half price cameras at the mo.

Have a look at argos.co.uk and it will give you an idea.

    Cheers for the replies!

A mate of mine did me the honour of ordering this camera through pixmania-pro using his VAT number so that VAT was not charged.

Does anybody have any idea what this camera is like?

    http://www.samsungcamera.co.uk/product/pro_view.asp?prol_uid=2461&cat_uid=11

It's in Currys on Stephens Day for €199 reduced from €489. Haven't a clue about digital camers so any assistance would be appreciated.

the one they're running works off AA batteries, but it does use SD cards which is kind of a trade off I suppose. :D

don't believe Samsung are really the best choice when it comes to cameras, but I guess it's hard to argue with 10 MP, lol. :p
