"I'll have a vodka please. And a coke for my designated driver. Nah, one glass is fine".

I would presume the bar keeps track of the coke going out and just charges coca-cola, then the pubs would be giving it out easily. Or perhaps coke just refund them the coke, in which case the bar would not be likely to hand it out easily, since the bastards make massive profits from it.

Will suit the tee-totallers really well, also people who just pop down to the pub to watch the match on the big screen you are going to have tables full of drivers!

I imagine it will be 1-2 designated drivers per group, and other people have to be drinking alcohol. Pubs will be keeping an eye. :)

Considering the enormous mark-up pubs in this country enjoy, it's disgraceful that it's up to one soft-drinks company to lead the way.

Irish publicans should be made sell soft drinks at cost, instead their fingers are fumbling in the greasy till, as per. €5.50 for a Rock-Shandy? That's a clear €4 profit at least.

Didn't some soft drinks company (not sure if it was CC) try this last year by giving out crates of mineral free to pubs? I recall some upraor on Joe Duffy about vintners turning around and selling the free crates of mineral for profit or something.

Nice idea if it's implemented right and not taken advantage of...

Have to agree with DublinWriter; when a bloody soft drink costs MORE than the damn alcoholic ones it almost seems like money down the drain for anyone who isn't out to get drunk or buzzed....designated drivers are being punished for taking the responsible approach and god forbid you want to take a few kids into the pub of an afternoon....cheaper to buy them a bottle of Moet between them...

    Hi all,

I have a similar thread open in the Food & Drink forum.

It seems that some pubs are not honouring the promotion so I am asking for the names of pubs that definitly do give free soft drinks to the DD.

    Hope you all can help.

Please see the link in my sig below.

    Regards,

It's a brilliant idea, hope it's taken onboard by several companies and not just coke.

I saw this promoted in a nightclub last year actually, I'm usually the designated driver as I have a car and don't drink anyway, but I haven't drank coke in about 3 years and don't plan to any time soon either. Sure there's usually free water, much better:)

I work in one of the pubs on the list in Dun laoghaire. We were given beermats with details of the promotion (have ran out of them already), but the pick up on the offer (on my shifts anyway) is slow. Then again a lot of our customers are from within walking distance. Most of the time it's punters trying to pull a quick one. I think it's a good idea, other suppliers eg Erdinger N/A etc should also do something similar.

Over the last 4 weeks driving home from Dun laoghaire to Bray I have been breathalised 3 times and have waved on through another 2 check points where others were being breathalised. I wonder will they keep this up for the other 11 months of the year?

Great idea. It won't work though as most of the greedy pubs will will sell the drinks to make even more profit for themselves!

More importantly its a "bargain alert" and incentive to not D&D, fair play to coke, I'll be testing this one over the weekend

Is coke really an incentive not to drink though? Replacing one liquid filled with sh1te with another, hehe. It's good advertising for them anyway.

I don't want to sound ungrateful, but a designated driver can only claim up to 3 free drinks! As it has already been pointed out, your hand will have to dig a little deeper in your pocket to pay for the exhorbantly-priced soft drinks for the rest of the night. "Every little helps", as Tesco says, but I find it a bit po-faced, especially considering that there are a great deal of pubs not even taking up the offer in the first place!

Perhaps they'd be better off giving away free Nightlink tickets at the bar instead?!?

Ah come on now, tehy don't have to do anything, three free drinks per driver!?
It's not like they need extra sales or anything.

I wouldn't be so cynical. Not everyone drinks (fancy that!) and it's a good incentive for groups to arrange rotating drivers.

However (there's always a however), given the profits made by publicans, they should be paying for taxis for groups of people. Yes I know overheads in the bar trade are very high, but the sales margins are huge.
