So I've been playin' for a while now (3 years of experience and then started it again recently) I'm lookin' to play Rhythm in a band coupled with vocals and have had my eye on an Epiphone Les Paul Standard over a Strat mainly cos I think it looks the shizz. Any thoughts??

Also, need new acoustic strings but I don't know which set of Elixirs to get.Have been using Medium gauge but am looking for a more 'summery' sound, more of a Jack Johnson sound

Careful about changing your string gauge. It'll most likely require a truss rod adjustment if it has been set up to mediums. You'll get less volume if you switch to lights (.11) because each strings has less mass. It'll also be less bassy, but as to whether its worth the change, thats debateable. Most changes in gauge are due to preferences in playability not sound.

yeah i agree with TelePaul in that changing guages is hardly worth it from a tone point of view. i regularly go from heavy guages to light depending on my mood. you'll hear some difference, but it wont be a huge one, not enough to give your guitar a new tone. just play with what's comfortable for you.

Get something different imo. I'd try out a Jazzmaster or something. I have both an LP and a Strat and they are very different beasts. Go into a shop and mess about with different guitars and see what you like. Also, I know it sounds stupid but don't forget what the guitar looks like on!! Some people look like muppets with certain guitars! Just picture a little skinny guy with a BC Rich Beast or Warlock!.........

I agree here. Try a Telecaster too, popular with alot of indie bands. The Epi Les Paul would be you first port of call if you DID wanna play heavy metal.

I'm gonna have to disagree with you there, I think the tonal differences are huge when moving from light to heavy gauges. For example, for a good jazz tone, you just plain can't use 9s. I can't play on anything lower than 11 myself, I can't get the same tones from my fingers and it just doesn't feel right.

It is all down to feel though.

i'd say ya could pick up a mexican tele for bout e300(second hand) if your lucky that should be perfect for ya(tele's are very popular on the indie circuit at the moment and are very good guitars aswell).......but try one out in a guitar shop beforehand, go in to town for a look and try what looks appealing to ya, then buy on-line, these guys here are good... www.thomann.de

Those Danelectros aren't fit to burn. Stay away unless you want to be put off guitar for life. Seriously.

Danelectros are beautiful machines! They have such a distinctive sound.
