Do us humanoids live long enough?

Funny how I thought of this topic as a thread!

(watching unlucky Alf on the fast show!)

Anyhoo what do people think, are we on the planet long enough to do everything that is possible or is it all relative i.e. the lazy b*stards will be lazy and the energetic people will eek out all the excitment possible before they go out with a bang?

My own view is maybe adding 30 odd years onto our lives in order to facilitate paying off these friggin mortgages so that your last house payment isnt on the same day as your funeral.

you could have done something worthwhile, instead you posted this thread on an internet site.

you answered your own question, it doesn't matter how long you live the majority of people are going to waste their time away doing ****e.

Would it not make more sense to cancel out the need to pay mortgages and the like before trying to extend our lives ..

I think we live long enough, unless you die early. Which would suck.

    and you?

personally i would rather die you than be old and decrepid and have to rely on others to take care of me.

now if we were to grow old (140ish) and still be able to function normally, then i say bring it on.

    Ask Karl Pilkington... :D

I think, on average, we have a decent life span and can't really have any complaints about it.

    Rawk on.

I was actually reading in a magazine recently.. some scientific magazine.. about the possibilities of human evolution given possible different outcomes. And one of them was about us living forever (or well past 1,000 anyways). They somewhat explained it that we would spend decades working, followed by decades of play/pleasure and then decades of work again etc. etc.

In general mammals of our size should live about 30 years
And mortgagues are getting longer - 40 years 100%

    A cautionery tail
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeanne_Calment
In 1965, aged 90, with no living heirs, Jeanne Calment signed a deal, common in France, to sell her condominium apartment en viager to lawyer François Raffray. Raffray, then aged 47, agreed to pay a monthly sum until she died, an agreement sometimes called a "reverse mortgage". At the time of the deal the value of the apartment was equal to ten years of payments.
sounds like a good plan, 90 year old woman - bound to pop her clogs any day soon
Unfortunately for Raffray, not only did she survive more than thirty years, but he died first, in December 1995, of cancer, at the age of 77. His widow had to continue the payments.

are we on the planet long enough to do everything that is possible
Well, until we're immortal the only answer to that is "No".

The question is the wrong way around. It shouldn't be "Do we have enough time?". The answer to that will always be "No".

Depending on when you ask the question, perhaps the question should be "Have I done it all?" or "How can I do it all?"

Or, given that we can't do it all, perhaps you should identify what's important to you and concentrate on achieving those goals.

Best of luck with that!! ;)

Is that a reply with a substantial answer?

Life expectancy is increasing and I think future generations will have better awareness of their own physical needs and physical fitness from day 1. We are becoming more aware of diet everyday, its a taboo subject.

Not really. Bestiality is taboo; health, fitness and diet are quite openly discussed.

Anyway, I am with Julep, if our bodies could sustain it then some extra years would be nice and would put retirement to good use, but atm it's probably too long for most.

Would the image portrayed from media that girls should be skinny like models where the result is an increased anorexia rate not be considered a taboo subject on behalf of the media and societies perceptions of dieting? It would be a form of controversy as you are failing to realise. Diet can be ignored or exaggerated. Moderation of our food and a balance is necessary not extremity.

I see what you mean but don't think that makes it "taboo" as such. Not talking about it at all would fit the term "taboo" a bit more accurately.

I don't quite understand the question, but no, I do not think that is a taboo subject.

There is life after 40 then?:)

I wonder if Cro-Magnon man was happier than us modern folk. Average age back in his time was about 30 methinks. Only a very select few would have made it to 60 and 70...

Men averaged a 30 year old life span back then? Women averaged less, with all the complications of childbirth (maternal mortality).

Read someplace that during colonial times parents often did not name their children until after they survived their first year. They were called "little angels."

Bible says three score and ten. If you exclude accidental deaths and war and famine and childhood diseases an adult could survive nearly as long as we do now. And famine is artificial since you don't get them in places where there aren't vested interests.

The life expectancy of AT BIRTH has gone up a lot over the last few hundred years. If you make it to fourth then it hasn't changed much over same period. A fourty old is only slightly more likely to make it past 80 than thier ancestors.

Yes. What do you mean by vested interests? I thought most famines came about due to the onset of agriculture? Crop failures, soil exhaustion etc...is that what you mean?

You know prolonged milk-feeding after weaning stimulates a hormonal imbalance, resulting in less likelihood of pregnancy. Also, I think there were/are certain plants and herbs that may be used as natural contraceptives.:)

I wonder if we were vegetarians would we live longer, i have a pair of tortoises who have a 150 year lifespan. A lot of parrot species can live for 100 years + and both are vegetarian.
    Maybe there's a lesson there.

Nice one. It's rare to see that correct response to the oft trotted out idea that they all died in their 30's "back then". In the middle ages though you would have been lucky to see 40 in some parts of the world. A fair amount of famous types from the past lived to great ages.

I don't agree with your reasoning or your conclusion. However, if you felt so inclined, you could test your hypothesis by feeding one of your tortoises its normal diet and force-feeding the other a diet that contained meat. After 150 years you can post your results here on boards. ;)

No the problems are the distribution of available food, especially people buying it up and hoarding it for monetry gain at the first sign there will be a scarcity, and poverty where people can't afford the prices or alternatives. Here during the famine and in ethopia, food was being exported during whilst people starved to death.

You are kidding Julie, right? That's not a racial slur at all, it's in fact a bonding term between people. It's similar to "Really buddy?", and has become a popular cliche across the 'net.

Vegetarians live longer, but not for the reason you think. Less meat means less thryptophan or short chain peptides or something, so you become less drowsy and gain an extra hour or two a day because you need less sleep.

Bowhead whales live up to 200 years if you believe the stuff about stone harpoons and they are total carnivores. Cats for when you take into account their size are probably the longest lived mammals and they too are obligate carnivores.

If you want live long forget being a carnivore or herbivore, become an autotroph or phototroph or photoautroph.

Less and less Dublin lads are getting pregnant ;)

On Topic: I reckon we live as long as we should. I really don't mind the idea of getting older, but I dread the thought of getting frail. I don't want to have anyone looking after me :(

As someone said earlier, we technically should only be living to our 40's like :o

Then again if that happened Britain may have been screwed without Churchill, Rome would have been a bit different without Julius Caesar and we would have lost art from Monet, Titian, literature from Cervantes etc etc....:D
