Training

    Hey guys,

I'm 23, 6'4'' and in or around the 23st mark.

I'm VERY unfit and starting in January will be a new me with a view to getting down to 17.5st by September, i plan to train 4 times a week but i would like to incorporate some sport as well, one of the options is Boxing which i've always been interested in taking up.

Im just curious how someone like me would be accepted(if even) in a boxing gym? Fair enough there's the age factor but you have the double whammy of being completely outta shape too.

If this isn't plausible, is one-one training an option? If so, how much would this generally cost?

Just to note, when i do eventually get into shape and if i'm reasonably good, i'd be more than willing to compete.

    Any advice is welcome.

    Cheers,
    Dan

5.5 stone by september is an awful amount of weight to lose.

Boxing will help you lose weight with the tough training, but you should also work out a diet with a nutritionist. Don't kill yourself.

You'd be accepted in a gym, but don't expect to be anymore than maybe someone to beat around the gym. Trainers generally won't hve any time for you, only their younger guys.

I'd suggest a muay thai gym for you. You'll train just as intense, but you'll get more time from the instructors. Muay Thai incorporates boxing, but also, kicks, knees and elbows. Sparring will tough you up, but expect to lose alot of weight from Muay Thai. Alot of people go to camps for 3 months to specically lose weight.

Bridgestone in dublin is tops in dublin.

The weight and time period equate to about 2.1lbs a week which is a healthy amount to loose. As long as i stay consistent there's no reason not to get there.

As regards of Diet, that's all being looked into..

Yeah i've looked into Bridgestone too, looks really really good, i'm just weighing up my options though.

best of luck with the weight loss mate. don't be discouraged the start. might take the body a little bit to kick in. run lots, drink lots of water. the diet is up to you.

No disrespect, but a boxing gym is not a place to lose weight or get fit. A leisure gym is there for this. A boxing gym is and always should be strictly a place for persons who are boxing and competing.

Getting fit goes with the Job as a boxer. It's a necessity, not a reward or luxury.

Best of luck with your regime, whatever happens

Hey just saw your post again, where you said you would be willing to compete. You are definitely aiming in the right direction then. Go for it

for a big fella starting boxing at your age wont be that bad as the heavyweight fighters are slower and less technical-work on getting fit and fast and with time, experience will help for your 1st fight-best of luck
