    Hey,

Does anyone have the contact details for the Judo Gi supplier that was at the Irish open - they do Dax Moskito suits.

They do mail order, I think they're based out of Clonsilla, but i've lost their details.

Lads whats the difference between a judo gi and a bjj one ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 450 ✭✭gymrabbit

As far as I can see

Judo gis come in two colours -blue and white (well white or baige)
BJJ gis can be any colour
Judo gis for competitoin have strict labels/patches etc. rules
    BJJ don't really have this
Judo gis are cut a specific way to be wide around the arms, have a skirt part and are generally double weave.
BJJ gis are cut to be much tighter around the body and may be single or double weave.

You can wear a Judo gi in a BJJ tournament, you can't wear a BJJ gi in a Judo tournament.

In short, the cut of the fabric is different.

So for a money saving student like myself who doesnt know which he will end up with, a judo suit would be the best?

One more question, how far down should the sleeves in a judo suit go? in a 180 they cover my hands but in a 170 they are a good 3-4 inches away from my wrist.

brasillians seem to be use kimono to refer to a judogi/keikogi/dogi/yer white pyjamas for some reason

What I can suggest is get a good quality judo suit that's as tight fitting as possilbe (I don't mean too small for you, just one that has narrow arms and waist). All suits are put together slightly differently. If you're a tall skinny fellow you'll find the 180 too big in the chest and skirt but the 170 too short in the arms. Try and try on as many different brands as possible to get something that fits. Generally, the judo suit will shrink by about 5% due to a hot wash (most cotton suits don't come preshrunk) so with the 180 you may be able to take an inch or two off it's sleeve length due to shrinkage.

However, the type of suit you wear really isn't a big deal. It's only competitions in judo they may call you up for wearing a dodgy suit. I think certain suits (thick labelled, double weave judo suits) can be more difficult to fight against but skill always heavily out weight suit type!

If you're a student like myself and only beginning judo/bjj/grappling I recommend you buy a 40 euro judo suit.

I picked up a nice 7 euro one from a second hand store the other day :D perfect condition.
Im just not sure its the right size

That too! the charity shops here are quite good for judo suits too. I'm a bit superstitious though, don't want to wear a dead guys kit.

Give it a wash at 60 degrees and if it's still too big, ah well, you'll just look a bit silly but save yourself 33 euro!

on't want to wear a dead guys kit
could be cool though, "I fight with the spirit of the man who died in this suit",
might freak out an opponent or two.

the suit is 170, Im not sure why I bought it my brother is thinking of taking up judo and I thought even if its too small for me then someone can get good use out of it, plus I just couldnt leave it go for that price. But like I said the sleeves feel a bit short compared to my HMD gi so thats why I was wondering about the size.

Most questions regarding judo suits etc will be covered on www.judoinfo.com Normally I'd have searched for the information for you & posted the url here, but I'm alittle pushed for time at the moment. Sorry.
