How long before a person is missing?

If someone went on holidays and didn't come back, how long would they have to be absent before they were considered a missing person? Would a family member have to file the report or could an employer do it? What would or could the cops do to try and track the person down, if they have any obligation to do so?

Just curious, really, nobody I know has vanished or anything.

Based completely on half remembered bits in tv shows, I think it's 24 hours.

Reminds me of that great Country song "How can I miss you if you won't go away?"

I have that same hazy recollection, but it sounds insane. You wouldn't go running to the cops because Johnny was a day late back from his trip to Oz, would you? I doubt the cops would pay much heed for at least the first week. I'm wondering what they'd do if they had no proof that the person was even back in the country.

"I got a good feeling about this"
    *Clicks*
    "Oh, didn't see that coming"

Or Cracker - How can I live without you if it means I gotta get a job?

I believe it is 48 hours. And I think family OR employer can file the report.
And based on personal experience, if you think someone is missing - by all means SEARCH!

Remind me never to get on the bad side of any woman on this forum. If it isnt being gagged and bound, its whatever revenge plans they came up with in that other thread.

    ... eek.

not sure how it works but an adult is allowed go missing unless there are suspicious circumstances so the true figure is probably higher

and lots of invisible people go missing too, how many illegal imigrants have disappeared ?
