There was the case of some American versions breaking from an update but as far as I know, the PAL versions are fine. Mine's fine anyway.

Are you able to access any sites? Personally, like Gmail or even boards?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,182 ✭✭✭Sparko

Not yet, not officially anyway. I did read about a way of getting onto the internet by using the shopping channel and a load of other messing around, but it was reported to be pretty slow. The Opera browser is out on the 23th I think, that'll allow proper browsing.

    23th??:D
Really that soon? You do mean the 23rd of this month right?
I plan on getting the browser but I don't really ever plan on using it.
I mean sooner or later malware is going to be made for the Wii and who wants to risk that?Maybe just for the odd quick search if I couldn't be bothered turning my computer on.Or if Nintendo offer some sort of security.

Yep, the 23th of December. Well according to this bit of news, Nintendo of Sweden leaked the date:

    Hopefully it's true anyway!

Not atm no. You can only update your Wii, send emails, access the Shopping Channel and trade Mii's online atm. The "Internet Channel" isn't listed and I assume it'll be added whenever they enable browsing. There is a "Forecast" and "News" Channel but you can't use them atm.

Also I've noticed my Wii does crash a bit if I'm reciveing mail or using the connection in any way when I'm exiting channels, screen just stays black for minutes. Tis annoying.

That's weird. Mine does stay black for slightly longer than normal, but nothing approaching minutes...

Anybody know when the news/internet channels are coming online?

Is there any way of getting the Wii on the net through USB I haven't been able to do it? It did work on wireless in another house

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,561 ✭✭✭Rhyme

The manual mentions a 'Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector' that should already be available... im heading into town to seek one out (and some rechargeable NiMH batteries).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 746 ✭✭✭whitetrash

That USB Wifi thing is for plugging into a pc so it goes Wii connects to pc which connects to the internet.

There's a ethernet dongle for the wii if that's any help.

Yes there is something wrong with the internet, some kid in Kansas is downloading TheInternet.zip and sucking up all the bandwidth!

    (Sorry, couldn't help it!)

why can't you just plug a standard USB into the back of the wii?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 746 ✭✭✭whitetrash

Lack of compatible drivers? The Wii doesn't run windows...

USB Wi-Fi thingy not out yet in Smyths/GAME... they mentioned next year as a likely date for these kind of peripherals but the guy in Smyths mentioned they are getting a shipment of Nintendo stuff in on the 18th so we'll see.

Is it illegal to use someone elses access point without a password then because i read it somewhere that its not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,561 ✭✭✭Rhyme

I think it's only illegal if you get caught ¬_¬

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,534 ✭✭✭Dman001

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 978 ✭✭✭AceCard Jones

My Wii hasn't once slowed down or crashed.
A return may be in order?

And using someone else's Internet connection is illegal....bit if they're thick enough not to have a WEP key then they deserve it:D
Reminds me of my desperate need for the internet when me an three neighbours were out:)

Anybody have any idea when trading your stars on your Nintendo account for Wii points will be available.I have been building up them stars for years!!!

Its not illegal to use someone elses unencrypted wireless connection. Its just not legal either. There is no law against it as its never been before the court.

Basically there was a case in US where someone got off on the basis that there was no sign up saying keep out which is what encryption essentially functions as. If you have to hack in then its illegal. If you can just connect then it is dodgy and not okay but not illegal.

The bricking of Wii's only occured on US Wii's where the users had not installed the start up disc. This happened because Nintendo accidently shipped shop display Wii's to retailers to sell that didn't come with the disc. Once updated via WiiConnect24, they brick themselves. Nintendo replaced the consoles for free obviously.

This doesn't really happen with the European Wii AFAIK.

Oh and to the guy getting long black screens sometimes when downloading. That is your connection timing out because Nintendo have not put in protection against it. If your connection drops a lot of packets then this can happen. You need to move closer to your WiFi router to get a better signal (most likely cause but not the only cause).

Anyone here know how often Nintendo plan on releasing updates for the Wii?
Like they update the VC list every week or so, but what about the consoles software?

Oh and is the browser out on the 23rd world wide or what's the story with it?

Pardon my french, but thats a load of balls.

The Nintendo Wi-Fi USB key was released ages ago, to allow people without Wi-Fi to connect to the net using their broadband->PC->USB Wi-Fi adaptor -> DS. Same with the Wii.

There is a USB Ethernet connector for the Wii, but it's not out yet, it's not Wi-Fi, so the muppets you were talking to probably thought that was it.

The DS Wi-Fi USB dongle for a broadband equiped PC will also work with the wii. I know the official one works as I tried it out on Friday before buying a wi-fi router.

Would you know anywhere i could buy one? I've only seen it on eBay.

I saw them when DS launched in Virgin (liffey valley) just sitting on top of the boxes. There was only one of them. My guess is if you ask at the counter they might have one or at least order them in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,881 ✭✭✭Kurtosis

Give HMV a shot, I saw them in Grafton Street at the start of the summer...they might have a few still floating about.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,012 ✭✭✭✭thebman

I imagine its the type of thing that they have a few in the back but they aren't worth the shelf space in the store so you have to ask at the counter for it.

Yeah, as a couple of people said above, you probably would have to ask at the counter. I had to at Game but they had it alright. I suppose it's either just too niche or too small and expensive to put on shelf. It cost me about 40 euro though as far as I can remember. Can almost getyerself a wireless router for that.... AND your PC wouldn't have to be on. (It does of course if you're using the dongle). I'd offer to flog it off to ya but I gave it to my nephew for his DS

USB Wi-Fi Max for DS on ebay
Should work with DS, PSP or Wii
(Or anything that uses Wi-Fi tbh)

I can't play my Wii till Christmas but was wondering how can I connect it to the internet. I have a 3 MB/PS broadband connection with Eircom (not wireless though) which I use on my PC. It is a netopia box with a Ethernet and USB connection for my PC. Would I be able to use the USB port on the Netopia box to connect to the back of the Wii? Or do I need to buy something else to connect it? Help!

    This is my Netopia box

I've the same Antamojo and it didn't work when i hooked it up to the USB ports at the back of the Wii. You'll either have to get a Wi-Fi router or one of those USB Wi-Fi connector's (you can get them for €45 in GAME in the Ilac Centre).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 404 ✭✭Antamojo

    One of these?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_Wi-Fi_USB_Connector

Can it connect to the wii from another room?
    Tis a bit pricey

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,561 ✭✭✭Rhyme

    Thats the one.

At the moment there is no way of directly connecting the Wii to an internet connection. The manual mentions a LAN adaptor that hasn't been released yet so Wi-Fi remains the sole method of connecting your Wii to the net.
