Which Processes can I Stop?

Bit of a basic question here I'm afraid.

PC is running a bit slow lately and I see that there are several processes running when I press Ctrl+ALT+Delete.

Which of these do I definitely need running - don't want to stop the wrong thing but there are 32 different processes running and I am sure I can stop loads of them.

Also how do I ensure they don't start again when I restart my PC. I know there is a way of doing this - read about it ages ago but for the life of me I can't remember how.

    Any help is really appreciated.

    Thanks

How much memory have you got?
Have a look here but make sure you read up on each service to see if it applies to your machine. Those are the ones that Windows starts, check the Startup tab in msconfig.exe (Start->Run->msconfig.exe) for the others.

I must look into that too, as I'm running 57 processes at the moment.

I had a similar problem and my pc basically ground to a halt. I ran msconfig.exe and "unticked" everything and rebooted. The result was like the day I first used my computer, amazingly fast. I then ran msconfig and "ticked off" the items one by one until I found the culprit that was slowing down my machine. You may find that you have two or more applications that conflict with each other, e.g. antivirus software and adaware software. Its just a process of elimination. Hope this helps. You will need to reboot after each selection so be patient.

you can get it down to 22 tasks (after a re-boot) with the right tweaks

also you can untick them all, and then install avg

I should look into this also. 42 processes (laptop) and a very slow login/start up boot is fast thou.
