Im not used to travelling on Irish trains, but next week I will be travelling from dublin to tralee and I was wondering about the tickets. If I want to get a month-return ticket do I have to get it in the ticket office or can I buy it on the train (in finland I normally just buy the ticket on the train).

You have to buy the ticket before you get on the train. There will be ticket outlets/machines in the train station.

    As above.
You can also book/"buy" them on-line and collect them at a ticket machine in Heuston station, if you have a credit card.

cool, thanks guys. I was hoping I could get it on the train as we may be in a hurry from the airport.

Have they upgraded the kerry-dublin trains over the last 4-6 years? Is there ample space above the seats for 15kg bags?

Trains will be similar on that route to what they were in the past. If you're in a hurry, why not book and use the machine pick up.

I wouldn't put something so heavy above though, however. Use the space under the seats pairs if possible.

If you're going to be in the airport anyway you should check out flying to Farranfore with Aer Arann. If you get the lower prices it's not a lot more expensive than the train and a lot faster!

well last time I checked them they were more expensive than my flights to Ireland :(

I guess I should check again, they might have had a price drop.

edit: just checked our dates (20th of december & 9th of january), it will end up costing 195 euro for the two of us :( our return flights from finland with ryanair only cost us 189 euro

Bad timing. There's some big Christian festival on during those dates and apparently a lot of people travel! :D

Train will cost you €70 each, very expensive. The Bus is a cheaper option but not for everyone.

according to their webpages a monthly return will only cost 60 euro.
We have ISIC cards that will end in january and our students cards that last until may, but I couldnt get a definite price for the bus online.

A student ticket will set you back €25.70 or an adult return is €32.00

From CIE website: Student Rtn: Student Return Tickets are valid for one outward journey on date of issue and for return journey for up to one month from date of outward travel. These tickets are not valid for two journeys in the same direction. Student tickets are issued at discounted fares on production of current International Student Identity Card (ISIC), or on production of a valid Student Identity Card issued by a recognised third-level college in the Republic of Ireland, but otherwise have the same conditions of validity as ordinary Return Tickets. The full list of colleges whose Student Identity Cards will be recognised by Bus Eireann for entitlement to student fares is given in "Your Journey/Student Travel" area of website.

so thats a student return ticket?

hmmmm, this price might convince the other half to take the bus instead of the train. Of course the train will be faster and more comfortable (plus we have a 3-4 hour train journey in finland too, so we will want to get back quickly )

Those are the online fares from Dublin city, there is a 10% discount online.

the regular fares are 28.50 Student Return and 35.50 Adult return.

You can buy tickets from the CIE desk at Dublin Airport that include transfer to the bus station on the 747/748 Airlink express bus.
