Looking for some help on the above. I have an asus a7v8x and an athlon xp2100. All was working fine for the last year to two until I decided to take some of the ram out of it for my second computer. The computer was off at the time so I took one stick out. When I turned the pc on later that evening I got "system failed cpu test" over and over again. Not sure if it was my imagination but I thought I got a smell coming from the computer as the sidecase was still off it, mind you the fan was thick with dust etc. I read somewhere that you take the ram out and you should hear some beeps while booting up but I dont get these. Anyone got any ideas on where to start, I know the obvious would be to replace the cpu with a known working one but I dont have access to one. I've taken this one out and reinstalled it but still the same. Done the same with graphics card. Anyone any ideas apart from kick it :D .... thanks in advance

Was the system plugged in when you removed the ram? Theres a small light on your mobo was that on when you remvoed the ram?

You could clear the CMOS refer to the manual on how to do that, ensure you didnt knock off the CPU fanw hen removing ram and reseat and ensure fan is plugged in.

I had this kt3 board before, Was a bit of a animal back in its time. Ive also had this problem many times. I found clearing the cmos ( remove the 20cent sized battery for 10-20 mins ) Boot the pc back up and go into the bios to check everything is round. Also try re-seeting your cpu.

But before all that clean all the dust out of your pc's fans. Especially the cpu hsf.

Thanks for the reply, no the system was turned off when I took the ram out. I will try that with the cmos battery. I already took the cpu out so I ended up cleaning the heat sink while I was at it. Will let you know how it goes. cheers

Removed the cmos battery and left it off for half an hour- still the same. I've been reading about people with similar probs and some suggested changing the power supply, if the power supply goes does it go totally, I have power coming into the computer and the cpu fan rotates on power up also lights on dvd drive etc so I assume the psu is ok. Any other ideas/comments. cheers

It's hardly related to ram? (even thou its a cpu error)
Check your manual to see if you need to have it in a certain dimm slot, also put the other stick of ram back in to see if i works.
