VGA Cable Resolution

Alright lads, i know theres been a lot of talk about this cable and Definition settings in general but i dont think this specific question was asked. so here goes.

i bought the 360 vga cable and have it hooked to my tv. it WONT display resolution of 1024 x 720 - only 640 x 480 (useless!) or 1024 x 768. i was using component previously and it displays 720p and 1080i fine no problems.

so there are slight (very slight) borders at either side at 1024 x 768 - is this proper HD? will it upscale my dvd's? (reason why i bought it) would it not be better to use component and get the "full" screen?

it defo supports 1024 x 768 over vga its just that at that res it just doesnt seem right as there are those slim black bars at either side - i.e. its not using the whole screen!

what resolution would you recommend using the vga cable at?

    What TV do you have?

I get that sometimes too. Somedays there aren't any black bars, some days there is. I just go with it.

Have you checked your tv settings? Should be able to change the screen from native to fullscreen.

I had a similar problem with mine. Depending on what res i had it set at. At first I thought it might have been the cable seen as i got a cheapo 2 off eBay. But tried an original one and it was the same.

There was a setting on my tv. under fine sync in the setup menu. Mine is a sharp LCD. not sure if this will help ya tho.

Could it be a wide-screen setting on the TV or Xbox? Can the screen be adjusted (made wider/marrow) in the TV menu like a Monitor can?

    its a sony 3LCD RP - KDFE50A11E

I have tried the above suggestions - wide screen setting through dashboard - full screen through TV - zoom to fit but bars remain (they are VERY slim tho and barely noticeable but when your almost neurotic with set ups these can still be very annoying

btw im using the official vga cable. I suppose ill have to get used to it - I changed over so i could keep my component spare for the Wii (leaving HDMI for the ps3 :D)

    thanks for the help lads

    cheers

edit: component looks alot better anywho (at least on my tv - colours more vivid etc..)

The problem is with the KDFE50A11E.

Many people (including myself) have had problems connecting to the TV by VGA - usually from laptops/desktops. For some reason it will not seem to marry up with the native 1280x720 resolution.

See the attached thread for more info - it's a 55 page monster, so try searching against "vga".

This seems to happen too if youre connecting to a monitor via VGA. If you select normal screensize and anything above 640x480 you get borders. big huge feckin borders at that. I found if you set the 360 to widescreen (even if its not a widescreen monitor) it gets rid of the borders and im running it in 1300 x 720 or something like that.
