Memory use

    Guys

My memory meter is running at 50 to 54% in idle mode,

Have run MS Defender, AVG, Spybot

Spybot did find something called ndnuninstaller which was apparently p2p warez.

Fixed the problem, ran everything again but still 50% memory use at idle.

Have also gone in and deselected all unnecessary startups, like i-tunes helper and quicktime but still 50% +

    Any advice would be appreciated

    Will

You could try running hijackthis and posting up the log here, some of us can have a gawk through it.

Unused ram is wasted ram. Ram is there to act as a buffer between the CPU and your really really really slow HD. The more stuff in ram, the faster your CPU can work.

As a result, windows tries to keep things in ram that it thinks will be needed. The only way to optimise (reduce) ram usage is to recode each and every program so that they use less memory.

If you have 256mb or 512mb of ram, 50+% usage would be the norm. If you have 2 gigs of ram, 50% usage might be a bit much for "idle" times, but once again depends on the amount of apps you have open and what you've been doing recently.

500mb would be about right for the amount of crap you are running. im running on 800Mb right now and only browsing and musicmatch. but have mysql and a media server running but idle. Forgot about mysql :p

First off, I see you're using AVG as well as Zone Alarm. Using two anti-virii programs not only use up a f*ck load of memory, but can cos your machine to crash.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AVG7_CC] C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgcc.exe /STARTUP
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AVG7_EMC] C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgemc.exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Zone Labs Client] "C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zlclient.exe"

Keep one, dump the other, and you should see a marked improvemnt.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,027 ✭✭✭greglo23

avg is anti-virus and zonealarm is a firewall so keep both of those.
if you have spyware and delete it you also have to turn off system restore before you do so as it will reinstall on reboot. your anti-spyware app cannot get at it while its in the protected system restore folder. once sorted you can turn system restore on again.

So how do i turn off some of the crap that is running

What is the bare minimum i need ?

Thanks for the help so far

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,401 ✭✭✭✭Anti

Just out of interest what is your page file set to ?

If its set to 1.5gb raise it to 2.2gb.

You dont seem to be running to much crap. But use the remove software wizzard to remove some apps your not using anymore.

Also i seen you running the alienware desktop package, Delete this straight away. Its a complete system hog. There are much nicer out there that use less resources.

start , run and type msconfig. go to the startup tab and you can disble startup items there. leave the microsoft ones alone also leave the anti virus and firewall apps in there
