IIRC a private with a couple of years service gets around $2000 a month,a private contractor even just driving trucks can get 20/30k a month.

They get paid the same as the do back in garrison. The difference's are that they get hazardous duty pay, along with whatever other benefits their job might entail. They are also exempt from taxes while deployed so there is a signifcant increase in monies received.

    Military pay scales
    http://www.dod.mil/dfas/militarypay/newinformation/WebPayTableVersion2006updated.pdf

Put it this way: I went as an LT, and came back with some $6K a month, tax-free. I was well paid.

If I held the glorious rank of "Private PV2", (E-2, fresh out of Basic) I would earn from that table, as follows:

    (Monthly)
    Base pay: 1,427
    Basic Allowance for Subsistance: 272
    Hostile Fire Pay: 225
    Subtotal: 1924.

Additionals: Uniform clothing allowance: About $25 a month
Basic Allowance for Housing if not ordinarily resident in barracks: $285 minimum, if unmarried. If married, $509 minimum. This is location-dependant: My BAH is on the order of $2,000 a month, as I live in an expensive part of the country.
Cost of Living Allowance. Also varies by location, where I'm at, COLA is on the order of $350 a month.
Family Separation Pay: If married or has a kid: $250

As a result, my tank driver, an E-4 who lives near me, would be pulling in nigh on $4,100 a month, tax-free. (He's not married). My gunner, who is married, but is also an E-4, would be making near $4,500 a month. Were I to go again, presumably as a Captain (I'm overdue), I'd be pulling in some $7K a month, tax-free.

As you can see from the tables, pay can vary both with rank, and years of service.
a private contractor even just driving trucks can get 20/30k a month.

One of my drivers briefly considered a contracting job after he got back. We strongly recommended against: The up-front money might be huge, but if he gets wounded, there would be very limited moneys for medical issues. If injured (Physically or psychologically) whilst wearing Uncle Sam's green uniform, he's taken care of for life by the Veteran's Administration.

    NTM
