Help needed for a New Dealer

A friend of mine is starting a dealing Job tonight in a card club in Maynooth, and he asked me to send him some decent websites or links giving tips and rules for dealing.

I vaguely remember a thread a while ago where someone posted some tips for calculating the pot and how much a Pot bet is, and other similar tips. So if anyone could link it that would be most appreciated, or if they have any other tips they might want to share, I'll be sending this thread to him and I'm sure he'd appreciate them all.

Also I'm not really much of a ruling buff, but I've seen a few websites bandied around which give a written set of standard rules. Anyone link the best one.

P.S. I tried the Search briefly, but couldn't find anything useful. :(

Surely he should get this information off other dealers in the club, especially regarding rules etc? How can they employ someone without ensuring he is competent at least?

He knows the rules etc. he just wanted to have some in written form and have a read of them this afternoon before going in, and then just to get some general tips from other dealers, I told him I remembered a thread on here and would e-mail him the link.

Fariy Nuf. I'll have a quick scan for the thread. I think though it is a bit early in the day for anyone but the student dealers to be up (not criticising lads, jsut saying the full dealer community won't be alive yet). Actually, if they were anything like me as students they won't be near up either.

Didn't Kilmaldinho mention this club in Maynooth and point out that pot size bets were "unique" i.e. they effectively forced an underiase for the 1st person to VP$IP?

I hope either they have changed or your mate is working a different club

I'm not sure exactly where it is, but I suppose if they have some mad rules they'll tell him before he starts. But I remember reading that thread alright.

but seeing as how every club has its own variant of the rules I'm not sure how much use it will be for him.

Tell him the handiest way of doing a sidepot is count the shortest stack, place it in the centre, count the same amount out of the other stacks in play and place those amounts in the centre, then move onto the next side pot (if there is one)

    e.g.

blinds 100/200, player A goes allin for 1200, player B goes allin for 5000, Player C goes allin for 1500, Player D pushes for 8000, all others fold.

first thing to do is to take in the blinds, these go in the main pot (unless there was a player allin for less than the BB). then take in player A's 1200, 1200 from Player B, 1200 from Player C and 1200 from Player D. this is the main pot.

There is a side pot between players B, C and D. player C was the next smallest stack after player A. he now has 300 left in front of him, take that in and place it in a seperate pot to the main pot. now take 300 from player B and 300 from player D. this is the first side pot.

finally there is a side pot between player B and player D. as player B has the shortest stack of the two, count his remaining chips (there should be 3500), place those chips in a seperate pot to the other two pots, then count 3500 from player D and place it in this pot. this is the 2nd and last side pot.

note, had player D just flat called the 5000 instead of raising, when you come to do the final sidepot player B's stack and player D's stack should be even. If you are ever doing a side pot like this and the stacks belonging to the players in the final side pot are not equal, either one of them did not put the correct amount over the line, or you screwed the side pots up somewhere along the way.

doing side pots this way rather than trying to work them out in your head mathematically has two main advantages, 1. its harder to make a mistake and 2. the players get to see exactly where their money has gone.

if you're doing a side pot and some player starts yelling "1250 in the side, 1250 in the side!", ignore him. always do side pots yourself. if you take his word for it and it turns out to be wrong, its your fault for not doing your job properly. just turn to the guy and say "im sorry, but this is how I do side pots, it'll only take a second" and carry on.

    few other points

encourage players to protect their cards, especially the ones in seats 1 and 10.

if a player is taking a long time to act and you dont know whether or not he realises its his turn, just lay your hand on the table in front of them or say "excuse me, its your turn to act". don't point at them, this really pisses some people off.

if a player does something wrong, like acting out of turn or splashing the pot, ask them poiletly but firmly not to do it again.

make a routine for yourself, like
    muck the dead cards
    award the pot
muck the winners cards and the flop
MOVE THE BUTTON (i still forget to do this myself sometimes :o )
    wash the cards
    rifle
    cut
check that the blinds are out
    deal

it might sound obvious but i found dealing became much easier once i had routine i could just fall into.

make sure players have all the large denomination chips in their stack on display and that they are not hiding their cards or taking them off the table.

enjoy the craic and banter but dont get too involved. (a) some players will think youre not dealing fast enough because you're chatting all the time. (b) its hard to joke with someone one minute and then call a string bet or somethnig on them a few minutes later.

    GL!

Tell him to take his time. Accuracy is much more important than speed. And it will make it look like he is is a regular.

Nothing worse than a dealer rushing the shuffle and sending the cards flying, or dealing too fast and throwing the cards off the table. Or only riffling once or twice instead of four or more times.

He can search the web for "Robert's Rules" by Bob Ciaffone.

unfortunately the rules in this club have no link whatsoever to and other club or to texas holdem for that matter. He should look in and see first....

    Mac...

I was speaking to him on the phone, and it is that club in Maynooth, he says apparently the guy that runs it was speaking to Sean Scanlon (is he with the Fitz, maybe I've got the name wrong??) to get a copy of their rules and they're following those rules now.

Last I heard though they still have those mad buy-in and cash-out rakes, although I didn't ask him about that tonight, so it might be gone too??

But don't quote me on that until I talk to him tomorrow and he confirms it again for me. And obviously everyone here knows that I've no affiliation to that club incase I'm wrong.
