    Hey,

Finishing my University degree this summer and really want to get out of Ireland for a year or so. Thinking of heading to China/Korea/Japan to teach English, did a TEFL course a while back also. Just wondering if anyone has any personal experience of teaching in Asia/ could point me in the direction of any possible employers..

    Any help really appreciated...

I worked in Shanghai, China over the summer in an Irish bar and met loads of Westerners in their twenties teaching, and this is the info I got from them, its 2nd hand now so not gonna be exact, and its all related to China, no idea about Korea or Japan.

Most had little or no Chinese, and it wasn't required.
Contracts were nearly allways the case, and usualy 1year, although I heard of a few 6 month ones.
Alot seemed to complain about their boss and chinese workmates, I imagine this was purely down to the dificulty in communicating.
Wage was pretty decent on the most part, a rough average of figures I heard, was usualy around the 10,000 to 13,000 RMB a month mark, which loosely converts €1000 -> €1300 a month. And often expenses thrown in, eg. appartment, often even flights over and back.
Note, wages in China seem to be allways paid per month.
€1000 a month sound like not alot? Believe me it can go a massive way, that is if you are not a big drinker, as alcohol in general seems to be roughly the same prices as Ireland, except some franchises in Shanghai, and of course happyhours.
For comparison, I think the minimum wage in Shanghai is around €70 a month, so your 1000 will go far, if you live like the Chinese do.

That was generally the idea I got from the Chinese school teachers.

However theres the otherside of teaching in China. That is the private Ex-Pat schools, only got really recycled information about them, but they seemed to be on brilliant packages. Heard figures of €30,000 a year, which in China is massive ammounts, apartment provided, etc. Ive heard though that they are very selective, and rarely accept applications unless they are seeking a position. Will post more if I remember

For teaching in Japan, JET is really the best way to go, but you've missed the deadline for this year (by about a week).
