hello, have my imac a week now. I have not got to play much with it for a the past week as i have been very busy. So all i have done all week is look up some sites on the internet and load music onto my ipod.

I plan to boot windows in the next day or two and add some programs.

anway in the past two hours my computer has (3 times----once while in itunes and twice while on a web page) started to go dark, but you can still see the page and siad YOU NEED TO RESTART YOUR COMPUTER . HOLD DOWN THE POWER BUTTON FOR SEVERAL SECONDS OR PRESS THE RESTART BUTTON.

I turned of the computer each time (where is the restart button, anyway) and on the first time it went funny i had to turn it off 5 times

when it comes back it says THE COMPUTER WAS RESTARTED AFTER MAC OS X QUIT UNEXPECTEDLY

    why is this the case?

hope this makes sense, i am rushing this message in case it goes agin

This could be a dud unit you got, or might be a simple matter of resetting the SMC and/or PRAM. Look at Apple's support docs, for example: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303446

Or call their AppleCare. Your computer came with 90 days AppleCare, so they'd be able to run through some troubleshooting steps with you.

I've never personally experienced any of these issues, so my advice is taken from sites like Macintouch.com and macfixit.com.

This happenened to me a couple of times too. It's called a kernal panic and is usually to do with a hardware conflict. I ran the "repair file permissions" in the disk utility and things were fine after it. Sould only take a few minutes

Urban Weigl was correct. I got a dud unit. apple are sending a new one out to me. I am using my old windows 98 again to type this message.

I guess i will be lucky to have the new one by xmas, but hell thats life, what can you do and not many bad things happen to me, i am usually lucky, but i guess these things have to happen.

the mac went funny on me on thursday (1 one week after i got it). i did not use it much for the first week as i was really really busy. No funny programs.

just heard from a friend (phoned while typing this message) a few dud dell units were sent to his work place.

    Thank Goodness for that!

I bet ya, by the way, that Dell didn't send your mates new units half as quickly as Apple did to you :)
