a few thing actually i need one server which i want to dedicate to active directory

my friend is selling an emachines 210 with 256Mb ram 80GB hard disk 2.3GHz celeron but the fact ts a celeron kinda turns me off of it though i doubt it would be a big problem for AD
ive heard both good and bad reports about emachines
this particular one is 3 years old how long more should it last before dying?

How many users is it serving? What OS do you plan running? Bear in mind that the dell one on ebay is probably noisy as hell!

only my home network so 5 or 6 computers max probs windows 2003 server enterprise for active directory im getting it for 100 euros with a free desk and monitor

noise is a big factor since ill have to sleep with it on beside me sometimes

Active directory is a bit over kill for only six PC's. Besides a windows 2003 enterprise license is not cheap! If I were you I'd just stick it on one of your existing PC's rather then spending it on a server your going to find it very difficult to even get extra RAM for...

Meh, AD for 6 users, a PII would suffice. The emachines might be a better option to be honest, espcially in ralation to noise.

Certainly watch out for noise on even the smallest Dell servers. I have an old PowerEdge server that sounds like a jumbo jet taking off .. and that's before the 10k SCSI disks have spun up :)

Know someone who has a 2400 xeon one in his garage (~40ft away) , at night you can hear it in the kitchen if the window is open the smallest bit.He says tis good for compiling stuff on though.Power usage too might be a thing

ive got a P3 with 320MB ram might suffice then? will also be throwing the odd gaming server onto it but i was considering using another machine for my apache ,php, mysql and gaming servers and an absolute must is a seperate file server with my 200GB drive that will only be turned on for backups and restores but ive got that part sorted

perhaps im being a bit too optimistic about 3 servers maybe 2 would suffice by combining the app server and domain controller but it an absolute necessity to have the fileserver machine on its own for backs only

An alternative, if you really need an AD server, is not to dedicate a physical machine to it, but a virtual one :) Use either VMWare server (better) or, if you must, MS's VirtualPC (both free!), get gobloads of RAM, and run AD plus one or more of your other servers on the same physical machine. The AD server probably isn't going to consume too much processor power on a home network.

Personally Id say sell all the "servers" that you have and start from scratch. Get a good case and build a more modern, quiet system, maybe even S478 or A from older parts. Get a quality PSU, lots of quiet fans etc etc.

You can virtualise on that if you wish.

dell do a poweredge for 360 euro after vat would sell my **** and buy it only for the noise thing

    heres my plan

    for files ill have
    compaq ipaq tiny silent pc
    P3 1000
    320MB ram
    200GB

    AD
    eMachines
    40GB hard disk(from a laptop)

    everything else
    a dimension xps 550MHz
    P3
    384Mb ram
    80GB drive(from the emachines)

then my mac and a pc and a desktop for my mum

6 machines total now i could use everything else and AD into one machine
but the question is should i ,ill be running some 4 person game servers for me and friends so might be best to keep it dedicated not sure really

you dont need a "server" computer to be a server!

Whats the overheads of these FPS servers? Still dont understand why you want to spend 900e a year on you leccie bill though with three machine!

Even a P4 1.7 with 512MB from adverts for ebay would give better peformance and use less juice.

The ebay one is a 2300, they are resonably quiet, you would not want it under your desk but fine in a corner of a busy office. On it and newer DELL's make sure you check the fan speed in the BIOS, but servers will still make noise on startup.

Avoid 1550's like the plague - they don't have a quiet mode

Windows PRO will share folders to 10 clients, DHCP can come form the box you connect to the internet with

check what license comes with the server, if it's got oem 2000 server happy days other wise a waste of money to buy licenses for it. also consider replacing ALL the drives, they are at the other end of the bath tub curve / all the oil has evaporated etc.

    right ive thought it over

    heres what ill do

feck AD i dont really need it use the emachine as my server and maybe a second server for files but as i said it would only be on when i need it on

or i could just pop the 200GB in beside the 80Gb one and backup from that

I had one of those before with ideas of using it as a server for my house.
They are way too noisy to keep in a house, far more suited to a colo/server room.
    Just build a 1ghz, 512mb 2x80ide running on a IDE raid card in Raid1.
Should be real cheap to build

Yeah, didnt think abotu that, But 4 scsi drives would be worth it. I just hope its not a onboard controller.

Plus i doubt it would be able to run any game servers that i would want it too :/

    Why?

Anyway, what are these game servers you are running?
