Military Coup in Fiji

It has been all over the news here for the past week or two as things were building.
The Kiwis and Australians provide the bulk of the tourists going to Fiji. It isn't going down too well of course. People are more worried about losing their jobs than anything else.

Yep, the millitary guy had been promising it for a week and he finally delivered.
I believe Australia and New Zealand and telling their citizens not to travel over for a while. There has been roadblocks set up in lots of places and local media is been censored.
Not the best time to be travelling over to Fiji all in all.

From what I gather it's similar to what happened in Thailand recently -- corrupt government, military overthrows it without violence, not much protest from citizens. Is that right?

I wonder whether or not the military will hold onto power. It doesn't appear so, they've said to the Aussies to give them a month and they'll have everything back to normal.

Happy days. Anyone familiar with Fiji able to give some insight as to whether or not the military's assertions about the government are based on fact?

There hasn't been too much in NZ news yet about the military's future plans. Yesterday the sacked the Head of Police (Australian guy I think) and put in their own.

There doesn't seem to be too much public fear just yet, well the media are not showing it if there is. The media is focusing on tourism and manufacturing jobs if this carries on.

The head of the coup has said he will defend his country if foreign forces are brought in. From his interview last week it seemed as if he doesn't want to fight it out.
